The Genomic Medicine Lab (led by A/Prof Owen Siggs) is a dynamic team with expertise in clinical medicine, genomics, and computational biology. The foundation of all of our research is genomics, which we use to better diagnose, predict, and treat disease. We have key expertise in diseases of inflammation and blindness, where we perform high-quality genomic research to enable clinical impact. We are part of the Garvan Genomics and Inherited Disease Program, the Centre for Population Genomics, and are supported by generous and long-term funding from Snow Medical.

THE OPPORTUNITY

An opportunity is available for an outstanding and motivated scientist funded by Snow Medical. As a Snow Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be part of an exceptional research team in a Snow Medical Lab based at a leading Australian biomedical research institute. You will have the opportunity to lead significant projects and develop new skills in a supportive environment with a strong emphasis on scientific excellence and a focus on impactful questions.

Snow Postdoctoral Researchers will receive a competitive salary/package and investment into their leadership and professional development. They are expected to show scientific leadership within the themes of the host laboratory and may be provided with the opportunity to manage a small team, depending on experience. The program will support career development through mentoring and leadership training, and provide networking opportunities.

Snow Postdoctoral Researchers will also be eligible and encouraged to participate in short-term placements in other Snow Fellow laboratories to gain expertise in new techniques, bring additional skills to the host laboratory or institution, and broaden their network.

Salary: $92,300 + 14% super + salary packaging (depending on experience)

Employment Type: 2 year term contract with the possibility to extend

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Perform high-quality independent research, including the development of study hypotheses, designing and executing experiments and analyses, and the preparation of high-impact scientific manuscripts and presentations.
  • Actively contribute to the development of research projects and collaborations, and the preparation of research grant proposals and progress reports.
  • Co-supervise and mentor students and junior research staff.
  • Actively contribute to a culture of scientific excellence through adherence to research best practices, rigorous quality control, and reproducible science.

ABOUT YOU

  • A PhD in a relevant discipline, such as Genomics, Functional Genomics, Population Genomics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or Statistical Genetics.
  • Highly autonomous with a strong motivation for independent research.
  • An outstanding publication track record, with demonstrated ability to lead projects to completion.
  • Excellent time management, communication (written and oral), and interpersonal skills.
  • A problem-solving mentality: able to navigate complex technical obstacles and work effectively with colleagues to solve them when needed.
