About the role
Reporting to the Team Leader/Senior Counsellor, the Counsellor will provide high-quality, evidence-based psychological support services to students. This includes assessment, therapeutic counselling, crisis intervention, case coordination, and referrals. The Counsellor will play a vital role in supporting students experiencing significant psychosocial challenges impacting their personal wellbeing and academic success.
Responsibilities
- Conduct individual counselling sessions (face-to-face, online, and telephone), including working with students presenting with complex mental health needs.
- Participate in the triage or intake system and support appropriate case allocation.
- Deliver counselling services across campuses, including regional support via remote service delivery, as directed by the Team Leader/Senior Counsellor or Senior Manager, Mental Health Wellbeing Stream.
- Engage in clinical supervision, staff meetings, and relevant training or professional development activities.
- Review caseloads and individual clients during supervision or with senior staff as required.
- Contribute to broader wellbeing initiatives across the university, including orientation activities, health promotion, and student engagement events.
- Design and deliver group training programs or psychoeducation sessions for students and staff.
- Ensure compliance with clinical governance, including documentation, monitoring, reporting, and recordkeeping aligned with professional standards.
- Maintain current knowledge of university policies, systems, and procedures to support students effectively and ethically.
- Escalate high-risk cases to the Team Leader/Senior Counsellor or Deputy Director, Wellbeing Services, in accordance with risk protocols.
- Participate in planning activities and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the quality and responsiveness of the counselling service.
Skills and Experience
- Membership of the AASW (Social Work) or registration as a Psychologist with AHPRA.
- Hold (or be willing to obtain) a Victorian Working With Children Check.
- Demonstrated experience post-qualification in assessment, evidence-based therapeutic interventions, and case management, including work with complex and diverse client presentations.
- Proven ability to conduct counselling across multiple modes (face-to-face, phone, online), including with high-need or at-risk clients.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Capacity to work in high-demand environments and respond flexibly to shifting priorities.
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and contribute to a supportive and effective workplace culture.
- Excellent organisational, time management, problem-solving, and documentation skills including accurate case recording and report writing.
- Understanding of relevant policy, legislative, ethical, and reporting obligations within your discipline.
- Confidence in using multiple databases and digital systems for appointment booking, client records, and service reporting.
