As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.

Purpose of the role

QFES is committed to improving the health, safety and wellbeing of its people as an integral part of its everyday activities. The wellbeing of QFES workforce, contractors, visitors and members of the public is a priority in its efforts to achieve a healthy and safe work environment, as well as providing advice and support to improve and/or eliminate all risks to health and safety, as is reasonably practicable, to prevent injuries and dangerous situations, and achieve its vision of creating safe and resilient communities in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and relevant standards and practices.

Reporting to Regional Senior Management, you will be a key member of the team and will work closely with QFES managers, staff, volunteers and external stakeholders to ensure positive outcomes from QFES safety, wellbeing, and injury management practices and initiatives.

Key requirements

Highly desirable requirements
- Certificate IV in Workplace Health and Safety.
- Experience and/or qualifications in workplace investigation.

Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

- Coordinate a broad range of safety and wellbeing activities throughout the region including consultative processes and networks, workplace inspections, organisational audits and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure a health and safe work environment.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure early intervention and optimal return to work outcomes for injured/ill members of the workforce, including rehabilitation and workers' compensation processes.
- Provide advice, support and training to members of QFES managers and workforce regarding injury management, rehabilitation, and injury insurance claims processes.
- Coordinate the identification and assessment of workplace hazards, conduct risk assessments and develop control strategies to address potential hazards, eliminate risk and enhance the safety and wellbeing of QFES members, staff and volunteers.
- Facilitate and/or conduct incident and accident investigations and preparation of reports.
- Prepare submissions, reports, briefings and other relevant documentation relating to safety and wellbeing issues and initiatives.
- Provide authoritative advice and support to managers and staff on all aspects of safety and wellbeing ensuring compliance with legislation.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of safety and wellbeing training programs and information products to promote health, safety and wellbeing initiatives and strategies in the workplace.
