Mainframe Storage Administrator

**Your Role and Responsibilities**:
**Position concept**:
The role entails the development, implementation, administration and technical support of MVS mainframe DASD and TAPE storage management systems, and participating and contributing in the planning and implementation of storage management projects as directed. The role is technical and requires creative and analytical ability to understand the interrelationships of IBMGS strategic storage management system products. Knowledge of the following products is mandatory;
- Tape management system, i.e. RMM, CA1
- Storage management systems, i.e. DFSMS
- Data management systems, i.e. DFHSM
- Data management systems utilities, i.e. ICKDSF, DFDSS
- Access Method systems, i.e. IDCAMS

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Attend regular team meetings where directed by the team leader;
- Implement and Maintain Software Products
- Ownership of a set of storage management products, covering initial business proposal through to installation, customisation and support of those products;

- Maintaining Reliability, Availability and Performance of storage systems.
- Through the use of various storage management tools - minimise interruptions to service (DFHSM), plan system changes appropriately via the appropriate change management tools, monitor performance to ensure SLAs are met, and provide capacity planning information for systems growth (DCOLLECT), DASD deployment via SPAD roles using DAIS and the DSPAM process..
- Technical Support of storage systems
- Provide technical support to other Kyndryl locations and groups by owning and performing requests for service (SRMS), implementing changes and resolving assigned problems
- Project Management
- Organise tasks into projects and manage them using the Kyndryl Project Management Methodology.
- Observing security guidelines
- Adhere to the Kyndryl Security policy as documented in ITCS104 and GSD331.
- Maintaining quality of work through observation of ISO procedures
- Follow ISO 9001 procedures in all aspects of work. Highlight areas for improvement in current processes, and implement improvements.
- Follow Kyndryl standard processes for Problem and Change management
- Upgrade and maintain backup solutions.
- Install and manage storage solutions.
- Provide highest level of technical support, guidance and direction for products supported.
- Analyse and resolve escalated problems.
- Maintain software licensing.
- Development and maintenance of backup and storage standards, procedures, policies, security etc.
- Ensure integrity of supported environment.
- Actively and pre-emptively determine possible faults and causes
- Provide team leader with input re projects/directions when required
- Manage and resolve problems identified by sys admins or monitoring software
- Work with change and problem management tools
- Provide technical assistance to the other members of the team.
- Hardware /software fault detection and correction - vendor liasing
- Liase with customer accounts as required

- Revision of H/W and S/W product enhancements and presentation to customers and delivery teams

The Storage Specialist is responsible for definition, maintenance (and sometimes interpretation) of control information required in the Storage Operations and Tape Librarian functions (refer to shaded boxes in the following flow diagram for deliverables). For example:

- SLAs
- Performance thresholds
- Critical situation controls
- Security considerations and policies (ITCS300, GSD331)
- Storage operations documentation
- Hardware / space configs
- Related process documentation
- Short-term and long-term operational plans
- Capacity plans
- Inventory control (ITCS204)
- Tape library management system procedures

**Required Professional and Technical Expertise**:
A minimum of five years current experience in a large-scale data processing environment including;
- Operational knowledge of z/OS Mainframe
- Library management and the operations of automated tape libraries, covering z/OS Mainframe
- Highly developed knowledge of Tape Management Systems used at the data centre,
- Good working knowledge of problem escalation tools (ISM)
- Good written and communication skills in exchanging general business and customer technical information related to media, including seeking or giving explanation and verifying.

An understanding and some proficiency in using one or more of the following;
- Storage Management Sub-systems: DFHSM, DFSMS, DFDSS, FDR, ABR
- Systems monitoring and scheduling packages (Control-M),
- Tools and techniques in identifying, analysing and resolving media problems,
- Knowledge of desktop SOE products and software (Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, Openoffice
- Operational knowledge of Mainframes - z/OS
- Library management and the operation of automated tape libraries - ATL, VTS, ACS, Silo/VSM
