Your key responsibilities
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role in accordance with QPS values as outlined above.
- Adhere to defined service quality standards, health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
- Work with integrity, comply with expected ethical and behavioural standards, respect patient's confidentiality and know the importance of patient information.
- Supervise, co-ordinate and participate in the day-to-day operations of Phlebotomy and Specimen Reception, ensuring a coordinated, effective and efficient workflow and strong team ethic.
- If required participate in the rotating operational roster to backfill sick and annual leave.
- Oversee the training of staff in the Phlebotomy and Specimen Reception work areas and assist in their further education and career development.
- In cooperation with the Supervising Scientist manage the physical resources of the specimen collection and reception service to comply with Pathology Queensland requirements.
- Develop an in-depth knowledge of the Pathology Queensland corporate pathology information systems and participate in training and troubleshooting as required.
- Demonstrate a high level of interpersonal and communication skills to enable effective interaction within the work group and between clients.
- Liaise with pathology clients and staff, and the Information System support unit over identified issues and/or problems. Be the point of contact for all specimen reception and phlebotomy issues.
- Participate in Pathology management and working party meetings on issues relating to Specimen Reception/Phlebotomy areas and contribute to policy review and initiatives within these areas.
- In consultation with Supervising Scientist undertake human resource management activities including organisation of rosters, leave management, recruitment and selection, and performance review of subordinate staff.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)
- Well-developed knowledge of Phlebotomy procedures or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge and skills in this area.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the procedures and processes of Specimen Collection or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge and skills in this area.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Pathology information systems [eg AUSLAB, and Cerner Millenium] and their relationship to maintain an effective laboratory practice, with the ability to trouble shoot and other functionalities for correlation and the recording of statistics.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, commitment to teamwork, and the ability to communicate effectively with all stake holders.
- Proven ability to manage time effectively and demonstrated ability to lead teams to positive outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain quality systems that meet NATA/ISO accreditation/certification requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and manage staff in line with quality human resource management practices with reference to Queensland Health Code of Conduct, employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical behaviour.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional self-development.
Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
- Proficiency in all aspects of Phlebotomy and Central Specimen Reception is required.
- While not mandatory, a relevant qualification would be well regarded. Certificate III or IV in Pathology and or Pathology Specimen Collection (Phlebotomy).
- Contemporary computer skills required for data entry, Excel and Word are essential.
- In some circumstances and following consultation, Queensland Health staff may be required to participate in 24-hour shift, on-call or weekend roster arrangements.This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia License.
