About us
**The Coroners Court is responsible for**:
- Independently investigating deaths and fires. Certain deaths and fires are reported to the coroners for independent investigation. Their investigations seek to establish the facts - when, where, how and why the death or fire happened.
- Reducing preventable deaths. Wherever possible, the coroner will suggest ways to prevent similar deaths or fires by making well informed and practical recommendations, based on the evidence before them.
- Promoting public health and safety and the administration of justice. The court regularly reports on data and trends regarding preventable deaths in Victoria to help inform public health responses.
**About the Coroners Prevention Unit**:
The Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU) is a service established to assist coroners in identifying opportunities to strengthen public health and safety through well-researched, evidence-based recommendations.
It is the only multidisciplinary team of its kind in Australia, comprising specialist staff who work to identify any potential failures and other factors that contributed to the incident.
Coroners can refer matters to the CPU at any point during an investigation. Additionally, the CPU undertakes both individual and collaborative research projects to support coronial investigations, underpinning a better understanding of preventable deaths in Victoria.
About the role
Within the CPU, the Mental Health and Disability Case Investigator assists coroners in their investigations into reportable deaths where mental health issues are identified or people with a disability have died whilst in care.
The Mental Health and Disability Case Investigator has responsibility to:
- Review medical, legal and health policy documents to identify the need for further investigation of mental health and/or disability related deaths.
- Prepare written advice to coroners identifying any factors that may have contributed to the death and recommend where improvements can be made to prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.
About you
We are looking for a dynamic and values-driven team player with excellent communication skills and a commitment to public health and safety with:
- Experience in the area of mental health and/or disability.
- Demonstrated experience in research and analysis with the ability to synthesize complex concepts into concise reports.
- Exceptional ability to plan and manage in-depth caseloads in a proactive way.
How to apply
- Resume.
- A cover letter (not exceeding two pages) demonstrating attributes and experience relevant to the role (see the Key Selection criteria in the Position Description).
- Response to the following question (in addition to the two pages above).
The Coroners Court is an environment that can expose staff to images, case history, testimony and behaviour that can cause stress and/or distress at times.
**Question**: What strategies would you employ to help deal with these potential stressors?
For further information on the role, please see the attached Position Description and a Day in the Life of a Case Investigator.
