Electrical Power Systems Engineer role at CSIRO. Join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team delivering applied research in modelling, control and optimisation of energy networks to support reliable, decarbonised electricity systems in Australia.
Your opportunity
As Australia transitions to a net zero emissions future, CSIRO is playing a pivotal role in transforming the energy sector. The Power Systems team applies advanced optimisation, simulation and analytical techniques to real-world challenges in energy network modelling and control. You will contribute to power system planning, analysis and operational support, working with partners to apply modelling and simulation to current and future electricity systems. This is an ongoing position with two capability levels; appointment level commensurate with skills and experience.
Your high-level duties
Conduct modelling and simulation studies of Australia's current and next-generation electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems (near real-time and longer-term timeframes).
Develop approaches for solving grid challenges related to renewable energy integration, battery systems or distributed energy resources, including benchmarking data models and deploying techniques in real-world deployments.
Apply specialist expertise to solve complex problems within a discipline or across diverse projects.
Participate in project scoping and planning, contributing to research direction and advising on services provided.
Act as a trusted advisor, anticipating client or project needs and adapting to changes in the external environment.
At CSOF6 level, may lead research projects, manage resources, initiate or take responsibility for projects, and supervise staff and students to ensure tasks align with research design and timeframes.

Salary
: AU$114K – AU$153K per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation (across two capability levels)
Tenure & work schedule
: Indefinite; Full-time; part-time and flexible arrangements may be considered

What you will bring
Relevant tertiary degree, or equivalent relevant work experience, in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or related fields with a focus on power systems engineering.
Demonstrated industry experience in electrical generation/distribution/transmission system modelling, planning, optimisation or control.
Experience with power systems modelling tools and programming/analysis tools.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues, collaborators, clients and stakeholders.
Enthusiasm for applied research solving current problems for commercial partners.
For CSOF6 level, significant industry experience, project leadership skills, and ability to supervise technical staff and students.
Desirable: modelling & programming tools such as SINCAL, PowerFactory, OpenDSS, PSCAD, Python, Matlab, R, or Julia.
