We're on a mission to prevent youth suicide in WA

Samaritans WA - in partnership with Ruah Community Services and Telethon Kids Institute - will be building WA's first short term residential service for young people (ages 16-24) experiencing thoughts of suicide. Join us in volunteering as a Support Counsellor within the state's first Youth Suicide Sanctuary(YSS), you will be contributing to something innovative for suicide prevention.

**Overview**

Samaritans WA aim to help build communities in which people have appropriate support to explore how they feel and to build mental wellness. We believe that everyone has the capability to find their inner strength and resilience. We understand that sometimes our capability can feel lost, especially when we feel overwhelmed, isolated, disconnected from others, or helpless. When provided with a safe and caring environment, a listening ear, and the support to explore our feelings, we can uncover our own pathway forward.

The Support Counsellor importantly supports the delivery of the Youth Suicide Sanctuary (YSS). Operating within the Samaritans WA model, Support Counsellors provide emotional support and informal counselling for young people aged 16-24 who will be based within YSS for the purposes of exploring their thoughts of suicide. Creating safety through appropriate role modelling and boundaries, the Support Counsellor will actively participate in structured and unstructured group activities, as well as work one-on-one with young people.

We're currently looking for volunteers passionate about creating inclusive and meaningful opportunities for young people to connect, learn and be supported. As a Support Counsellor you will be committing an average of 14 hours (face-to-face) per month, providing emotional support. We're looking for everyday people with the commitment and willingness to give others time and space to explore their emotions.
