Sr. Electronics Failure Analysis Engineer, Energy
Tesla Clovelly Park, South Australia, Australia
Overview
The Failure Analysis Team's mission is to determine root cause and contributing factors to improve the experience of Tesla's Energy Products by reducing field issues, in collaboration with a large cross-section of other engineering teams. Engineers and Technicians on the team are responsible for a wide variety of Energy Product systems, including Powerwall, Megapack and Supercharger. This is an individual contributor role with high internal visibility that requires extensive hands-on work focused on failure analysis and root cause activities. The engineer will be responsible for identifying, analyzing, root-causing, implementing countermeasures, and reporting on issues affecting systems including power electronics, low voltage, and battery systems among others.
To be effective in this role, the engineer will be intimately familiar with the detailed behavior of these electro-mechanical components and the tools and equipment used in their design and manufacture. The position will work closely with other engineering teams to root cause and implement countermeasures of field issues to improve quality, reliability, and durability of the products. This role offers the opportunity to work on industry-leading products and bleeding-edge technology in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment.
What You'll Do
Drive issue resolution from root cause analysis to countermeasure implementation on electromechanical components from Tesla's Energy Products.
Investigate system assemblies and battery modules to identify root causes of failure in Tesla's Energy products.
Design and conduct fault replication tests on battery and LV electronics and high-power converters, including board rework and firmware/hardware testing.
Collaborate with engineers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to drive resolution to identified failure causes.
Provide inputs to design and manufacturing teams to improve design and production yield, including lessons learned and product teardowns to identify risks.
Support design reviews and DFMEAs based on prior failure experience.
Demonstrate attention to detail and strong communication skills.
What You'll Bring
BS/MS Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent experience.
Strong demonstrable experience in battery electronics and battery modules for energy storage/automotive applications.
Electrical/Electronic design experience is a strong plus.
Hands-on experience with electrical test equipment: power supplies, multimeter, oscilloscopes, and other common equipment.
Strong focus on adhering to Lab safety practices.
Proficiency in reading schematics and troubleshooting analog and digital circuits.
Familiarity with or willingness to learn failure analysis techniques including 2D and 3D X-Ray, Cross Sectioning, FTIR, DSC, SEM, and FLIR Thermography.
