The key duties of the position include:
The Role
The Group Leader Guided Weapons Sensors and Processing (GWSP) is responsible for the provision of effective leadership of a group of scientists, engineers and technicians who define the GWSP Science & Technology Capability (STC). They will lead a complex area of S&T by providing the vision, guidance, direction and collaboration necessary to ensure that the capability can be most effectively harnessed to deliver agreed outputs to Defence.
They will:
Provide leadership to create a motivating, collaborative and inclusive culture to ensure all internal and external staff can make effective contributions to deliver Defence outcomes.
Forecast future Defence problems, initiate research and generate new knowledge to produce enhanced Defence capability.
Understand client priorities and associated requirements, and transpose these into well-planned sets of S&T activities.
Ensure that the STC's resources are applied to agreed priority activities to achieve milestones and report outcomes to appropriate clients on a regular basis.
About our Team
Sensors and Effectors Division (SED) applies science and technology to the sensing for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance and the delivery of physical effects.
Areas of focus include Weapons Systems Technologies, Explosive Ordnance, Electronic Warfare, Surveillance Systems, Undersea Systems, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence.
The Intelligent Weapon Systems (IWS) Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) within SED drives the application of S&T to develop, assess and integrate intelligent weapon system concepts for precise prosecution of threats and assured delivery of effects, to enhance current and future Defence operational capabilities in complex and contested environments.
The Guided Weapon Sensors and Processing (GWSP) STC undertakes cutting-edge research into developing Electro-Optic (EO) and Radio Frequency (RF) sensor technologies for future guided weapon systems, develops processing algorithms that advance weapon sensor capability, and integrates them into prototype systems for test and evaluation.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have:
Experience, knowledge and international reputation for excellence across a range of S&T applied to Defence in one or more of the following areas relating to Electro-Optical (EO) or Radio-Frequency (RF) seekers and sensors:
Component technologies;
System design and development utilising emerging technologies;
Signal and image processing;
Integration into guided weapons or other Defence systems;
An understanding of current trends and emerging disruptive technologies relating to future guided weapons;
Demonstrated experience in leading, managing and working with diverse teams within an S&T environment;
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including to convey complex information and concepts to a broad spectrum of audiences including military and civilian Defence personnel, other government departments and agencies, industry, academia and other stakeholders;
A sound understanding of Defence client priorities and associated requirements and the ability to achieve outcomes, which meet customer, needs.
Eligibility
Security Clearance:
Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at "Negative Vetting Level 1".
Mandatory Qualifications:
Tertiary qualifications (or relevant skills and experience) in one or more of the following (or similar)
Engineering (e.g. Electrical; Electronic, Sensors & Digital Hardware; Mechanical; Other)
Science (e.g. Optics/Photonics; RF Technology; Numerical & Computational Mathematics; Physics)
Information & Computing Sciences (e.g. Artificial Intelligence, Distributed Computing & Systems Software; Information Systems)
