The Analytical Services Branch consists of a team of over 100 staff based in Port Melbourne and North Ryde. We are responsible for conducting chemical and biological measurements for sectors including food, health and environment. We perform a diverse range of tests (including microbiological, allergens, elements, nutrients, contaminants and other). We provide analytical solutions and technical expertise for the private sector and the government agencies to meet their business, research and regulatory compliance needs. We also work closely with the tertiary education sector by undertaking collaborative research towards MSc and PhD studies. The Technical Development section provides highly effective and timely capability development to address emerging issues meet new stakeholder requirements and provides capability of national strategic importance for emerging needs.

We are excited to be offering an on-going role based at Port Melbourne that will focus on food nutrition and food safety analysis. The Technical Development Officer role is highly analytical, engaging with staff across the laboratory and the associated support functions on the site.

- Good understanding of laboratory quality systems requirements per ISO 17025
- Demonstrated expertise and hands on experience in chemical and biological sciences
- Demonstrated experience and ability to operate, maintain and trouble shoot problems with advanced lab instrumentation such as Liquid and Gas Chromatography (MS/MS), PCR technology, microbiological assays and ICP/MS
- A proactive approach with enthusiasm for personal development and learning
- Seeking to build leadership, interpersonal and communication skills with a history of working well within a team
- Ability to develop collaborative working relationships with internal and external collaborators
- Ability and confidence to work independently or under limited guidance

**What you will do**:
This position is based at NMI Port Melbourne and is a full-time on-going position engaged in work that contributes significantly to the capability, strategic development and promotion of NMI's capabilities to its key stakeholders.

You will report directly to the Technical Development Manager but will be working and/or engaging frequently with;
- Senior staff and managers of the NMI
- The Laboratory Services Units
- Business Development (BD) & Engagement Branch
- Quality & Safety Team, in particular the Port Melbourne Quality and Safety Managers
- Accreditation bodies such as NATA, TGA & BSI
- Government and private sector
- Universities and other research bodies

There will be significant opportunity for personal development and to engage with broader NMI, the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science and Resources, organising committees of conferences and forums.

- Undertake essential programs to learn and develop
- Undertake Research and Development projects to address emerging measurement issues and create new measurement solutions
- Undertake the development, validation and documentation of methods in accordance with ISO 17025, NATA and other accreditation bodies
- Work closely with laboratory staff to understand needs, share ideas and effectively train for handover of newly developed methods.
- Coordinating stakeholder engagements, both internal and external (tertiary education sector, industry, government)
- Coordinating student placements under the NMI protocols, liaising with NMI management, the student and their education institution
- Support innovation in methodology and processes, including research and providing directions for new capabilities and improvements
- Develop an understanding of NMI's strategic role within government
- Represent NMI at technical forums and events, including presentations of research outcomes
