The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.
Reporting to the Senior Legal Advisor, Criminal Offence Unit, the Legal Advisor is to provide legal advice and manage a caseload in relation to the investigation and prosecution of criminal offences under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law. Additionally, the role will support the legal services division by working collaboratively across all areas of health practitioner regulation and providing legal advice and support to Ahpra and the National Boards.

**In this role you will**:
- Deliver expert legal advice both written and oral on criminal investigations, ensuring compliance with the National Law, applicable legislation, regulations, and codes of practice.
- Independently manage a high-volume caseload—including complex and low-risk prosecutions—ensuring effective legal service through oversight of all prosecution elements and coordination with legal providers and stakeholders.
- Provide legal advice and support to Inspectors, working collaboratively with and supporting other Ahpra colleagues.
- Where appropriate, conduct investigations of low and moderate risk complaints about alleged offences and exercise statutory powers as an Inspector.
- Supervise and mentor junior legal staff.
- Provide professional legal advice and recommendations in relation to the development and review of policies and procedures ensuring national consistency and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to a database of relevant prosecution outcomes and advice.
- Other duties as directed by the Senior Legal Advisor -Criminal Offences Unit.

- Admission as a legal practitioner to any state or territory and holds an unrestricted practising certificate _(Essential)._
- At least 2 years post admission legal experience as a legal practitioner.
- Proven criminal law experience and preferably experience conducting or overseeing criminal prosecutions.
- Exemplary communication skills - both written and verbal - with the ability to clearly articulate complex information to a variety of audiences
- Excellent case management and organisational skills; together with the ability to autonomously plan, prioritise and manage competing tasks and deadlines.
- The ability to build and maintain constructive relationships with colleagues and internal and external stakeholders.
