The department plays a key role in the Australian Government's agenda to create jobs and build a stronger, more resilient and competitive economy. Our work builds on Australia's existing strengths, supports businesses to grow, and drives new opportunities for long-term productivity growth and prosperity. The success of the department helps Australia recover from the economic consequences of COVID-19 and adapt to its ongoing effects. Through our work, we support the government's economic recovery plan and help to deliver a better future for all Australians.
**About the team**:
Come and be a part of a smart, flexible, friendly and fun team managing the transition to net zero emissions in the gas sector. We're based in Canberra's CBD, but have team members across Australia and a digital-first culture.
Australia's gas policy settings impact energy security, affordability, the environment, and local economies. This is true in Australia and in our export markets.
Australian gas is integrated into many modern supply chains as a source of energy and as a feedstock for manufacturing. These supply chains connect us with our trade and investment partners, creating essential goods, services and jobs.
But the role of gas will change will change as the world decarbonises. How, and how fast, are highly uncertain - dependent on an unknowable range of future events.
In this context, we're developing a clear long-term strategy for Australian gas to support decarbonisation, future proof our region's energy security and maintain our international reputation as a trusted trade and investment partner.
**The opportunity**
Be part of the team positioning Australian gas to:
- support decarbonisation of the Australian economy, including meeting our national climate targets of 43% reduction in emissions below 2005 levels by 2030 and net zero by 2050

- maintain the trade and investment relationships critical to Australia's economic prosperity
- help our trade partners on their own paths to net zero.
**What's in it for you?**
Take advantage of a rare opportunity to:
- build you networks across and beyond the Australian Public Service through high-profile, cross-cutting and meaningful work
- excel in public policy development, and
- contribute to the national interest.
You'll gain first-hand experience of national-level policy processes in a complex and diverse stakeholder environment, honing skills engaging with:
