**The Area**
The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC) is a national facility in Canberra, Australia. It was established to support the development of the next generation of instruments for astronomy and space. The AITC provides cutting-edge, extensive capabilities in the development of high performance instrumentation for ground-based telescopes and space missions, including precision manufacturing, rapid prototyping and the test and evaluation of small spacecrafts.
The AITC is currently involved in the design and construction of large instruments for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the Subaru Telescope, and other ground-based observatories and space-based capabilities, in Australia and internationally. The AITC leads extensive, cutting-edge space technology programs in laser communications and earth observations. The AITC also hosts and operates the Australian National Space Testing Facility.
The AITC is hosted by the Australian National University, Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Mount Stromlo Observatory.
**The Position**
**The Person**
To excel in this role you will have an undergraduate degree and progress towards postgraduate qualifications in a relevant science, engineering or related discipline, plus over four years relevant practical experience, OR an equivalent combination of applicable training and over eight years relevant experience.
- Research and development initiatives in the areas of astronomical instrumentation, space instrumentation and scientific detector systems. Experience designing electronics and/or development of detector systems for scientific instrumentation is highly desirable
- Developing and implementing major projects for astronomical telescopes, laser communications and earth observation; working closely and effectively with industry partners, suppliers and contractors
