
Principal Project Officer

Lead the analysis, provision of high-level advice and policy response in relation to government strategies, policies and legislation affecting access to mineral, petroleum and gas, geothermal, greenhouse gas storage and extractive resources; and prepare correspondence, briefs and submissions on these matters in response to Ministerial, government agency, industry and public requests. Lead the review of nature conservation proposals, local government planning schemes, regional plans and other government land use and resource management plans, and provide advice and submissions to minimise their impact on mineral, petroleum and gas, geothermal, greenhouse gas storage and extractive resources. Lead the assessment of planning, transport, social, environmental, cultural heritage and economic constraints on access to land for exploration and development of resources at regional and local levels. This may involve sourcing data and advice from other agencies, management of specialist consultants, and use of geographic information systems. Supervise and undertake the identification and assessment of known mineral, petroleum and gas, geothermal, greenhouse gas storage and extractive resources and prospective areas using Departmental and industry information. Supervise and undertake fossicking area planning and implementation and the provision of advice on the operation of the Fossicking Act 1994. Lead the preparation of regional strategies and detailed proposals for the protection of regionally significant mineral, petroleum and gas, geothermal, greenhouse gas storage and extractive resources in town planning schemes, regional plans, and State agency land management plans. This will involve complex decisions on competing values, and high-level report writing and presentation skills, and some geographic information system capability. Ensure the adoption of these proposals by planning agencies through high-level consultation and skilful presentations. Public presentation and negotiation skills are highly desirable. Other duties as directed and required.
