Communications and Media Manager - Canberra based.

Lead the marketing and communications direction for the peak body that represents, advises and advocates for all local councils across Australia.

The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) is the national voice of local government, representing 537 councils across the country. Structurally, ALGA is a federation of state and territory local government associations, that pursues the agreed interests of members at the national level. At its heart, the association provides leadership, develops policy, shares information whilst building close partnerships with our members and their councils.

Currently ALGA have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Communications and Media Manager, to join their team.

Utilise your strategic thinking with hands-on delivery, in this autonomous yet highly collaborative role. Enjoy planning, creating, and introducing new ideas - we welcome your strategic thinking. With no direct reports but a high level of responsibility, you'll have the opportunity to shape and drive impactful communications initiatives.

As a key member of the ALGA team, you'll promote and communicate ALGA's advocacy priorities and policy achievements - leading external and digital communications, managing media and social engagement, creating compelling content, and building strong national stakeholder relationships.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Promote and communicate ALGA's advocacy priorities and policy achievements.
  • Develop and implement communication strategies to amplify policy work across key stakeholders, including government and media.
  • Lead the planning, management, and delivery of all external, corporate, marketing, and digital communications.
  • Oversee media relations, including proactive story placement, media releases, and interviews for the ALGA President.
  • Hold key relationships with political and media contacts.
  • Manage high-quality media, digital, web, e-news, and publication outputs with support from the Media and Events Officer.
  • Oversee website content and imagery for articles, submissions, and media releases.
  • Prepare speeches and tailored communications for the President and CEO.
  • Manage ALGA's brand, style guides, and relationships with external designers and contractors.

About you:

  • Demonstrated and high-level experience in strategic/corporate communications, media relations and digital.
  • Ability to drive strategic communication within the federal political environment.
  • Strong experience and understanding in working with the Australian political system.
  • Strong connections and understanding of the Australian media landscape.
  • The ability to build strong and effective relationships with key stakeholders and national media.
  • Proficient in marketing and communications design software.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of the contemporary communications and media landscape, including proficiency in social and digital media.
  • Excellent time management skills, including managing projects and competing demands.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both in a team environment and independently.
  • Knowledge of the local government sector and/or experience in a Minister's Office would be advantageous.
