Take the next step in your fire safety engineering career with Orbe.
This role is ideal for someone with more than a year of experience in the fire safety engineering industry who is ready to build a long-term career in the field.
You'll work closely with experienced engineers and directors to develop performance-based fire engineering solutions, gain greater project ownership, and strengthen your technical and consulting expertise.
Fire safety engineering protects people, property, and the environment by applying engineering principles to understand fire behaviour, how buildings respond, and how people react in emergencies.
About Orbe & What We Offer
Orbe provides professional consultancy services to a wide range of clients.
Our reputation is built on word of mouth — our clients trust us because we deliver practical, effective solutions.
Our small, close-knit team shares knowledge so every member can grow their career.
We pride ourselves on delivering tailored, practical outcomes that ensure people can live and work safely in the buildings we help shape.
Orbe Offers:
- Career development pathways to grow your technical and consulting expertise, progressing toward Chartered (CPEng) and nationally recognised registered engineer status.
- Supportive and flexible working arrangements — we don't expect long hours or timesheets. Balance is part of our culture. Laptop and other equipment provided.
- Co-working offices in South Melbourne and Chippendale with basketball courts, a gym, end-of-trip facilities, weekly free breakfasts, and monthly events.
- Exposure to a wide range of projects in commercial, retail, and residential sectors, with opportunities to engage directly with architects, builders, and clients — see your ideas recognised.
- Direct mentoring and technical guidance from senior engineers, including Directors, to support your progression to more senior roles.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the delivery of performance-based fire engineering solutions for diverse projects — from high-rise precincts and airports to defence facilities and community housing.
- Assist in preparing fire engineering analyses, design reports, modelling, and documentation.
- Undertake research, modelling, and analysis to support compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC), Australian Standards, and relevant legislation.
- Participate in client and design team meetings, workshops, and site inspections, supported by senior engineers.
- Contribute to internal improvement initiatives, such as developing templates, tools, and knowledge-sharing within the team.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Safety Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Building Services, or a related discipline.
- Around one year of experience in the fire safety engineering or building design industry, ideally with some exposure to performance-based design.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Familiarity with the NCC, fire safety standards, or performance-based design principles.
- Exposure to fire engineering software (e.g., FDS, CFAST) or other modelling tools (CFD, FEA) is beneficial.
Key Attributes
We're looking for someone who has already gained a taste of fire engineering and wants to build a long-term career in the field.
- Curious and proactive — eager to deepen technical understanding and consulting skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Detail-oriented, with the ability to deliver accurate work within project timeframes.
- Collaborative, with excellent communication skills for working in multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Self-motivated, with an interest in professional registration, technical leadership, and continuous development.
Your Application
Submit your CV and any other material that demonstrates your abilities and personality — such as a cover letter, email, video, Excel model, or Python script.
We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. Our current employees have joined us from careers in carpentry, services design, maintenance, fire brigade, automotive, and large multi-disciplinary organisations.
We'd also like you to respond to a few short questions
(No perfect answers needed — just show us how you think.)
- Have you been in a building and noticed anything unsafe?
- At least one of the following:
a. Why consulting?
b. Why fire safety?
c. Why the built environment? - Tell us about a time you used problem-solving in your extra-curricular activities or project experience.
