For more than 40 years, the North Qld Export Terminal, located at the Port of Abbot Point, has demonstrated its commitment to safety, efficiency, responsibility, and partnership with the local community.

APO has been contracted by North Queensland Export Terminal Pty Ltd to manage operations of it's coal export terminal at the Port of Abbot Point—Australia's northernmost coal port—located 25 kilometres north of Bowen, between Townsville and Mackay, serving as the gateway to the Whitsundays.

Abbot Point Operations has an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Production Operator to join a structured two-year traineeship program. This role provides hands-on experience across terminal operations while completing a Certificate III in Resource Processing, offering a strong foundation for a future career in operations or supervision.

What You'll Do:

  • Gain practical experience in the safe operation of port equipment, fixed plant, and mobile machinery
  • Learn to maintain high standards of housekeeping and workplace safety

    Assist production teams in monitoring and managing production flow
  • Follow established procedures and work instructions under the guidance of supervisors
  • Support reporting, data entry, and operational record-keeping
  • Participate in daily inspections, hazard identification, and safety reporting
  • Collaborate with various teams and departments, including Maintenance, Projects, and Shipping
  • Develop an understanding of port operations, plant processes, and industry best practices.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Sound computer skills (MS Word and Excel)
  • Flexibility to work a day/night lifestyle roster
  • Current driver's licence
  • Current White Card (or ability to obtain)
  • Commitment to learning, teamwork, reliability, and professional development.
