Emerald Queensland, Australia Kestrel Coal Resources Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

Company description:

Kestrel Coal Pty Ltd

Job description:

About Us:

We are Kestrel - one of the world's largest producing underground coking coal mines, delivering around 7 million tonnes of high-quality metallurgical coal annually to global steelmakers.

But what truly sets us apart is our culture. It's not uncommon to walk down the breezeway and strike up a conversation with our CEO or Executive Leaders. We believe that great ideas come from anyone, and we empower our team members to bring their insights forward - knowing they'll be heard, valued and that the path from idea to implementation is refreshingly short.

We strive to create an environment where everyone feels respected and supported. Whether you're an experienced professional or just starting your career, at Kestrel, you'll find opportunities to grow, contribute, and have meaningful impact.

With a mine life to 2033 and reserves to 2046, we're planning for a future that's safe, sustainable, and full of opportunity - for our industry and our people. We're proud of where we've come from, and even more excited about what's ahead.

About the role:

The Graduate Engineer - Automation / PCS (Process Control Systems) / Mechatronics / Software will play a key role in supporting the implementation, optimisation, and maintenance of automation and process control systems across Kestrel's operations.

Reporting to the Coordinator Automation and forming part of the Engineering team, this role offers hands-on exposure to the design, programming, and troubleshooting of automated systems primarily in underground operations. It provides an exceptional opportunity to apply technical knowledge in a practical mining environment and contribute to Kestrel's growing automation capability.

As part of the Kestrel NEXTGEN Graduate Program, this position supports the development of future engineering capability through structured learning, mentoring, and on-the-job project experience.

Why you'll love working here:

  • A permanent role on a site with a strong future - long mine life and room to grow.
  • Monday to Friday or a 9-day fortnight, the choice is yours.
  • Great pay and perks - Including competitive incentives, housing options, and salary packaging.
  • Health-first mindset - With our award-winning Health Program and subsidised private health insurance.
  • Supported to grow - We'll back your development through tailored programs like our award-winning 'Unleashed' Leadership Program and study assistance.
  • A culture that walks the talk - Respect, agility, commitment and collaborating as one, aren't just values - they're how we operate, every day.

In this role, you will support Kestrel by:

  • Support the maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimisation of control systems and automation infrastructure.
  • Assist with PLC, SCADA, and software system programming, configuration, and diagnostics.
  • Contribute to the design, testing, and rollout of new automation initiatives and technology projects.
  • Collaborate with Production, Engineering and Maintenance teams to ensure system reliability and integration.
  • Support data collection, analysis, and reporting to enhance system performance and operational decision-making.
  • Participate in improvement projects relating to process control, digital systems, and equipment optimisation.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, drawings, and configuration records.
  • Apply sound engineering and safety practices in all tasks, ensuring compliance with site and legislative standards.
  • Actively engage in learning and development through mentoring and project-based rotations.

About you:

You're a technically minded and innovative graduate who enjoys problem-solving, systems thinking, and applying technology to improve real-world operations. You're motivated to develop your engineering capability in a hands-on mining environment, working as part of a supportive and forward-thinking Engineering team.

You will also have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Mechatronics, Automation, Electrical, Software, Computer Systems, or a related Engineering discipline.
  • Strong interest in industrial automation, process control, or digital systems integration.
  • Foundational knowledge of PLC, SCADA, or programming languages (e.g., C++, Python, or ladder logic) is desirable.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and attention to detail in technical work.
  • Enthusiasm to learn within a fast-paced, practical environment.
  • Sound computer literacy and comfort working with data and digital tools.
  • Willingness to complete site-specific training and work both surface and underground as required.

A Place Where You Can Be You:

At Kestrel, we're building a workplace where everyone can thrive. Inclusion is active, and equity is intentional - not a KPI.

We celebrate people from all cultures, communities, and identities, and we're committed to creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where you can be yourself.

We welcome applications from everyone - including First Nations people, women and candidates from culturally diverse backgrounds.
