Senior Governance Specialist

Full-Time

Total Package $161,230.72 per annum (inclusive of superannuation)

($143,956.00 base, plus $17,274.72 Superannuation)

This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a governance professional to be at the forefront of sector-wide impact.

WALGA is seeking a highly experienced and seasoned governance professional to join our Governance and Procurement team, who are the trusted source and authoritative voice of governance advice for Local Governments across Western Australia. This team is a crucial pillar in providing our Members with essential information, advice, resources, and services relating to Governance and Procurement practices.

As the senior member of the team, you'll be the first point of contact for complex governance enquiries from CEOs, Presidents, Council Members, and Officers, building trusted relationships and delivering timely, accurate, and practical advice.

You'll respond to a wide range of enquiries, from local laws, gifts and meeting procedures, to guiding Members through the development, adoption, and review of governance frameworks, including delegations and policies.

What your day to day could look like:

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and promotion of WALGA's online governance resources, and take the lead in creating governance-focused training materials for Council Members and Local Government employees.
  • Provide expert advice on better practice procurement to support technical, budgetary, governance, and compliance needs, helping navigate the evolving governance landscape with confidence.
  • Represent WALGA at forums, workshops and Zone meetings, strengthening relationships with Members and supporting sector-wide engagement.
  • Mentor Governance Specialists, triaging enquiries and fostering capability across the team.
  • Work closely with the Manager Governance and Procurement to deliver strategic priorities and support sector reform, including the Local Government Act review.
  • Provide internal advice on advocacy proposals and legislative changes, contributing to WALGA's policy influence and sector leadership.
  • Oversee monthly Member communications and provide strategic advice to WALGA's internal stakeholders on legislative developments and advocacy initiatives

As the Local Government Act reform progresses, you'll also play a pivotal role in analysing regulatory changes, shaping consultation and engagement processes, and guiding Local Governments through the transition.

No two days in this role are the same, and that's what we thrive on

Enough about us. Let's talk about you.

You bring extensive experience in Local Government governance, with a deep understanding of the necessary systems and processes and a practical, solutions-focused mindset. You're confident in policy development, research, and analysis, and you communicate with clarity, professionalism and understanding. A legal qualification and a thorough understanding of the Local Government Act and the broader legislative framework in which Local Governments operate will make the greatest impact.

Please note: As this role will travel to Local Governments across the state, a valid class 'C' driver's license is required.
