The Role

The Treatment and Rehabilitation Clinic (TRC) is one of three services within the NSW Community Forensic Mental Health Service (CFMHS). The TRC adopts a multi-disciplinary, collaborative model of care focused on recovery, rehabilitation, and community safety. It provides evidence-based biopsychosocial treatment and rehabilitation services to support people in achieving recovery from complex disorders that result in problematic behaviours including offending.

The TRC is a community-based clinic but will also provide initial prison in-reach services to support future clinic patients, to optimise safety and treatment success. The initial focus of the service will be the provision of evidence-based assessment and treatment for problem sexual behaviours. In the longer term, the clinic will also focus on other problem behaviours.

The Senior Social Worker TRC is primarily responsible for delivering specialist forensic mental health care, which considers peoples' clinical, psychosocial and risk vulnerabilities while applying best practice clinical tools. The Senior Social Worker will provide specialist assessment, formulation and intervention to people presenting with problem behaviours and their families/carers or other supports. Interventions will be provided individually, in groups, and via virtual health/telehealth as needed. The Senior Social Worker will assist in the development and evaluation of therapeutic programs and provide supervision, consultation and training to other social workers or allied health staff within the organisation. The Senior Social Worker will work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team and will also engage with other treating teams and key stakeholders to optimise a patients social functioning, treatment and recovery, and build capacity to manage problem behaviours.

Essential Requirements:

o   Tertiary Degree in Social Work or other equivalent qualification providing eligibility for membership of Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).

o   Demonstrated extensive experience in forensic mental health practice, specifically risk assessment, management and treatment of problematic behaviours.

o   Demonstrated extensive experience in providing clinical supervision and/or training.

  1. Tertiary Degree in Social Work or other equivalent qualification providing eligibility for membership of AASW. Minimum of five years full time equivalent post qualification experience, with at least two years full time equivalent experience in the field of forensic mental health.
  2. Demonstrated specialist skills in forensic mental health care, including experience providing treatment to specifically address problematic behaviours in adults with mental illness; complex risk, clinical and social needs; and demonstrated experience with administering evidence-based clinical tools to identify and manage clinical risks and protective factors that reduce poor health and criminal justice outcomes.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team; provide specialist consultation to and develop and maintain effective partnerships with, a range of key health and corrective services stakeholders.
  4. Proven experience in effective written and verbal communication (including comprehensive social work assessment/treatment reports) that demonstrates a capacity for objectivity, therapeutic optimism, cultural sensitivity, and recovery orientation - and the ability to adapt communication style to suit different audiences
  5. Demonstrated ability to operate independently with minimum direct clinical supervision, yet proactively seek support; demonstrated ability to provide clinical supervision to less experienced clinicians or students in order to build capacity; mentoring and development of junior staff and students.
  6. Highly developed self-leadership skills including high degree of motivation; ability to work to tight deadlines and under scrutiny from other agencies; high level of organisational skills; ability to work autonomously but also as a team member; and to show empathy yet encourage others to enhance their practice by providing education and training in forensic mental health practice.
  7. Working knowledge of relevant legislation including Mental Health Act 2007, Mental Health and Cognitive Impairment Forensic Provisions Act 2020, Crimes Act 1900, Crimes (High Risk Offender) Act 2006 as well as other relevant legislation, i.e. Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998, Trustee & Guardianship Act 2009.
  8. Hold current NSW Drivers License and willingness to travel for work purposes.
