Where you'll be working:
The Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Service (AMIHS) provides antenatal and postnatal care in the community, from as early as possible in pregnancy to up to eight weeks after birth. AMIHS links closely with other maternity services and our Building Strong Foundations (BSF) team, to ensure that risk management, education and support are available. AMIHS is part of the wider Children, Young People and Families Service (CYPFS), which includes a multidisciplinary team of allied health workers and nurses. The AMIHS Aboriginal Health Worker works closely with our local health district's other Aboriginal Health Worker to ensure cultural connections and a supportive work environment.
Taree is located on Biripi Country and sits on the banks of the beautiful Manning River. Our Biripi community are part of the Gathang speaking nations, sharing a dialect continuum with the Worimi and Gurrigay people. Indigenous culture is vibrant and inclusive in Taree and there are many ways to connect to country and learn more about Aboriginal culture and customs of the Biripi people.
About the role:
The Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Services (AMIHS) aims to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal women and non-Aboriginal women with Aboriginal partners during pregnancy and birth. The Aboriginal Health Worker provides flexible, holistic and culturally sensitive health services to Aboriginal clients and the community. They work in a partnership model with Midwives to achieve better health outcomes and better access to health services for Aboriginal people. This position requires strong collaboration and partnership with the AMIHS Midwife and Maternity services to provide support and consultation to facilitate an accessible holistic service.
Services provided by AMIHS include:
- Regular antenatal checks
- Help with booking into maternity hospitals
- Referral and support to access other services
- Postnatal checks and support to attend child and family health services
- Health promotion and community activities
- Support and information on nutrition and feeding
- Support to access quit smoking programs
You will be part of a supportive team of AMIHS workers and Building Strong Foundation Workers and a part of the wider Children, Young People and Families Service. The successful applicant will receive orientation and training while in the role, this includes mandatory education and training specifically for the AMIHS role. We encourage and support both internal and external support, with regular cultural supervision and Local Health District linkage to other AMIHS teams and Aboriginal Health Workers.
About you:
Candidates will have skills in teamwork and be able to adapt their communication style to target their audience. You will be working with a busy case load of clients, who often experience psychosocial complexities. The role requires you to provide assertive follow up to from the start of a woman's pregnancy, or when they engage with the service, up until their baby is 8weeks old. Candidates are required to have a good understanding of local needs, including individual and community strategies to close the gap in infant morbidity and mortality and to improve health for children, families and carers.
