Police Multicultural Advisory Group Member

The PMAG provides a state-level advisory role in partnership with the QPS and multicultural communities in Queensland. The PMAG aims to contribute to internal and external organisational policing strategies to enhance how the QPS engages and responds to culturally, linguistically and faith diverse people and communities within Queensland.
The PMAG will provide the QPS with an avenue to enhance community trust by proactively seeking culturally appropriate solutions from cultural leaders and experts to ensure community views are considered in the development of policing responses and practices across the state.
The guidance and advice from the PMAG will enhance organisational cultural capability and cultural responsiveness, strengthen relationships between the QPS, multicultural people and communities within Queensland, and ultimately contribute to building a safer, more resilient state.
The QPS is committed to the Queensland Multicultural Policy and Multicultural Action Plan , including specific actions relating to the priorities of: delivering culturally responsive services; driving diversity and inclusion across the public sector; and promoting social cohesion.
Selection CriteriaExpression of interest applications are sought from candidates who can demonstrate one or more of the following:
- Ability to lead informed discussions about complex issues impacting multicultural communities at a state and/or strategic level.
- A demonstrated ability to be constructive and objective to enhance QPS engagement and service delivery to multicultural communities and individuals within Queensland.
- A demonstrated active involvement in community initiatives and networks.
- A demonstrated high level of integrity.
- Ability to meet the PMAG requirements and key responsibilities including serving the required term.
The objectives and scope of the PMAG are to provide advice and guidance in relation to:
- The development of internal and external organisational policing strategies to enhance QPS engagement with and response to culturally, linguistically and faith diverse individuals and communities.
- Informed discussions with culturally, linguistically and faith diverse individuals, communities and key stakeholders including through local decision-making bodies in their respective capability.
- Act in the best interests of multicultural communities.
The PMAG membership will comprise the number of persons determined and appointed by the PMAG Chair through the selection process. The PMAG will maintain a minimum of 9 members and a maximum of 15 members.
When appointing any person to the PMAG, the selection panel will give consideration to:
- Ensuring diversity in gender, age, location, interest areas, cultural background, cultural intelligence and diversity in skillsets and experiences is represented, wherever possible.
- Vulnerable and marginalised ethnic and cultural groups including those from refugee backgrounds is represented, wherever possible.
- Knowledge and/or experience with government, community organisations, academia and knowledge of the carceral system and human rights.
- Members should have a high level of integrity.
- Members will possess strong community links, experience and knowledge to support their role.
- The period of appointment of each member will be determined by the PMAG Chair, based upon the identified needs of the QPS and the PMAG, with a minimum of a two (2) year tenure.
The PMAG will report regularly via the secretariat to the QPS Executive Leadership Team on progress towards the development of internal and external organisational policing strategies to enhance how the QPS engages and responds to multicultural communities and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
The advice provided by the PMAG will be for internal QPS consideration with the secretariat providing governance and oversight of the PMAG work.
Meetings and SupportLocation, dates and times of meetings will be established and coordinated by the QPS secretariat. Where feasible, technology platforms will be used to assist members who are not able to attend meetings in person. Microsoft Teams will be the preferred online meeting platform.
- The PMAG will meet quarterly.
- Delegates or proxies for members will not be accepted.
- The QPS secretariat will provide logistical and administrative support for PMAG meetings.

Appointment and RenumerationA PMAG member will be:
- Appointed on a part time basis for 2 years.
Renumerated through daily sitting fees under Level 3, Regulation, Administration and Advice Renumeration Procedures for Part-Time Chairs and Members of Queensland Government Bodies being up to $150 per day sitting fees for a maximum of 4 hours.
Successful applicants will be required to undergo suitability checks which will include a criminal history check and identification of any potential conflicts of interest. Members will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement, contract and abide by the Queensland Government Public Service Code of Conduct.
