In-house Legal Counsel (Competition Law) – Fixed-Term Contract

About the Role:

Elevate has partnered with a renowned retail group to onboard a skilled Competition Lawyer (3+ years PQE) for a 12-month fixed-term contract. This role focuses on a niche intersection of competition and property law, driven by upcoming regulatory changes effective 1 January.

The successful lawyer will advise on transactions requiring special approval from the ACCC under the new mergers law, including leasing or purchasing land (e.g., paddocks) for major Australia-based retailers.

Ideal Candidate:

A mid-level lawyer with a strong background in competition law and experience handling regulatory submissions. This project offers the opportunity to work on impactful matters in a dynamic and evolving regulatory landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice on transactions subject to ACCC approval.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory submissions.
  • Liaise directly with the ACCC to facilitate transaction approvals.
  • Advise on the intersection between competition and property law.
  • Support a portfolio of smaller, high-impact matters.

Required Experience & Skills:

  • 3+ years' post-admission experience in competition law.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing regulatory submissions in similar regimes.
  • Strong understanding of ACCC processes and regulatory frameworks.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple locations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Work Environment:

  • Hybrid work model: 3 days per week
