The Shepherd Centre (TSC) is a highly regarded not-for-profit, providing specialised programs for children with hearing loss and their families. Our programs meet the needs of children of all ages; from our world-leading early intervention program for babies and toddlers, through to our mentoring program 'Hear for You' for school-aged children and teenagers. We have been empowering generations of children with hearing loss to listen, speak and have a voice for over 50 years, creating a world of choice and amplifying possibility.

TSC currently supports over 900 families all over Australia, providing in-person and online support from 10 locations across NSW, ACT, Queensland and Tasmania. Our global platform HearHub, supports health professionals working with children with hearing loss all over the world

About the role

We are currently seeking Speech Pathologists to join the fantastic team at our Canberra centre in Rivett Our Canberra centre is home to a supportive and collaborative multidisciplinary team, providing wrap around services to our clients.

This role is available as either a fixed-term or permanent position, offered on a full-time or part-time basis (minimum three days per week). As a family-friendly and flexible organisation, we are open to discussing specific days and hours with the successful candidate. If your availability differs slightly, we still encourage you to apply, as working arrangements can be negotiated.

You don't need prior experience working with hearing loss – comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided to help you develop the specialist knowledge and skills needed to thrive in this space.

Occasional travel to Sydney may be required, and we regularly welcome team members from other centres to foster connection and shared learning.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Guiding and coaching parents/care-givers to become the primary facilitator of their child's listening and spoken language development in their everyday environments, through individual, group and consultative sessions
  • Working with other team members such as Audiologists and Child and Family Counsellors, to provide an integrated approach to family goals around listening and spoken language
  • Developing, facilitating, implementing, monitoring and evaluating annual Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs) with the team
  • Carrying out NDIS activities, including making clinical recommendations and discussions with families on services they engage
  • Monitoring and evaluating the child's progress via formal and informal diagnostic assessment
  • Preparing and participating in delivery of group programs where required

Essential Criteria:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Speech Pathology or Education of the Deaf.
  • Membership with Speech Pathology Australia.
  • Foundational knowledge of speech pathology is required; however, full training, support, and mentoring will be provided in the hearing and listening development space
  • Highly developed verbal communication and writing skills.
  • Desire to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Passion for working with children and supporting their families.
  • Ability to work flexibly and resourcefully in a busy environment.
  • Willingness to obtain Registration to Work with Vulnerable People, and a NDIS Worker Check
  • Driver's license and access to a vehicle.
  • Full working rights to work in Australia.

Desirable Criteria (but not essential):

  • Experience working in the area of hearing loss.
  • Experience working in family centred practice.
  • Experience working with children in an early Intervention setting.
  • Experience working with families under the NDIS.
