Compass is looking for a front-end software engineer to work, learn and move into full-time work with the company. We are a multi-award winning company that uses connected vehicle data to help transport professionals build better, safer, cities. Compass was named a top startup employer for companies under 20 employees in 2023. We operate across AU, NZ, the UK, and USA. Our current clients include almost every state transport organisation in Australia as well as New Zealand's Transport authority. Notably, our dev team consists of ex-Canva, and ex-Agoda.

The company is employee-owned and has a performance-based ESOP scheme with a brand new office in Surry Hills, ping pong table, Friday drinks, daily coffee runs, and annual offsites. We work hard to provide meaningful career experiences for all staff, including projects that have changed the transport policy landscape in AU, NZ, and the UK.

About you:

We're looking for someone who is self-motivated, collaborative, and comfortable working independently. As a small team, we value team players that leave their ego at the door, are level headed, and are willing to learn from others in the startup community and other Compass employees. We value community building, investing in people, innovation, and building data-driven products that create value. We place a strong emphasis on the willingness to learn and cultural add in our interview processes.

Preferably someone with at least 3 years of experience. Ideally, your experience would be in front-end, but back-end development experience is also valuable. Ideally, you would have some knowledge and/or experience in some of the following:

  • Typescript (including generics and mapped types)
  • React
  • State management (Jotai and MobX highly regarded)
  • Async generators
  • Vite
  • Vitest and Storybook
  • CSS Modules
  • Mapbox or similar

Also nice to haves:

  • Async generators and promises
  • Protobuf
  • GCP
