An exciting opportunity to work for an independent statutory authority, whilst working closely with some of Victoria's most respected building industry professionals.

Position overview

The VBA is entering an exciting new phase – as we expand our regulatory footprint and amalgamate with allied and complementary services in becoming the Building and Plumbing Commission.

We are also refocusing all our regulatory activities towards better consumer protections and greater support of practitioners through targeted education and engagement.

To achieve our ambitious agenda, we are seeking registered building inspectors to join our highly valued, skilled and experienced team; so, we can expand our reach and support the quality and quantity of sustainable housing that is built to last.

The Inspector, Building in the Preventative Inspections team is responsible for undertaking building inspections and audits informed by operational intelligence to drive and ensure suitable levels of practitioner compliance with relevant building legislation, codes and Australian Standards. The Inspector, Building will document and communicate compliance expectations to practitioners and exercise statutory powers in line with VBA policies and guidelines.

What we are looking for:

  • Experience conducting site-visits, inspections and audits of building work across all stages of construction and occupied buildings under section 204A of the Building Act 1993.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Building Regulatory Framework contained in the Building Act 1993, Building Regulations 2018, and the National Construction Code .
  • Ability to communicate information efficiently and effectively to internal and external stakeholders over the phone, in person and in email.
  • Well-developed written communication skills to prepare a range of technical and business correspondence, enforcement reports
  • Willingness to exercise statutory powers in line with VBA policies and guidelines and make recommendations for the use of compliance tools
  • Current Victorian registration as a Building Inspector and current Victorian driver's licence.

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) is the primary regulator of Victoria's building and plumbing industries, ensuring compliance with relevant laws that protect the Victorian community and promote confidence in the built environment. The VBA manages practitioner registration, monitors industry standards, and enforces compliance through inspections, investigations, and audits. It also supports industry professionals by providing guidance, education, and resources to uphold safety, durability, and sustainability in building and plumbing work. The VBA is committed to promoting accountability and continuous improvement, and plays a critical role in safeguarding Victoria's construction standards and ensuring quality outcomes for all Victorians.
