About the role:

The Deadly Choices Program Officer is responsible, as part of a small team, for the delivery of school and community-based health education, promotion and prevention activities, in line with the Regional Action Plan and localised Key Performance Indicators.

The Deadly Choices Program Officer is supervised by the Deadly Choices Program Leader, and the position has no supervisory responsibilities.

This position works closely with other members of the Allied Health team and maintains regular contact with other program staff to ensure effective outcomes for clients.

Key responsibilities:

1. Program Delivery

2. Assist in the logistics and undertake delivery of the Deadly Choices education program into schools and communities.

3. Delivery of Further Preventative Health Activities

4. Work with the Team Coordinator to plan and implement localised events.

5. Delivery of Community Days & Clinic Support Activities:

6. Assist in the logistics and setting up for delivery of Community Days and Community Controlled Health Service (CCHS) activities.

7. Delivery of CCHS Staff Training Workshops

8. Conduct a range of workshops and support activities for CCHS staff, to improve tobacco cessation screening and intervention practices and processes.

9. Undertake and/or support the quality delivery of the workshop sessions covering tobacco use and smoking cessation and/or mental health and nicotine dependence.

10. Support CCHS clinic and program staff to build knowledge and capability to address and respond to tobacco use and nicotine dependence.

11. Clinic Processes

12. Work with CCHS to identify and strengthen internal referral pathways between services and programs, to assist access to support services and programs.

13. Identify continuous improvement opportunities and report to the Team Coordinator

14. Develop understanding of clinical, social services programs and operations.

15. Marketing and Promotions

16. Ensure consistency of campaign approach, responsibilities, and messaging

17. Identify and utilise program feedback processes and collation of program testimonials and images

Other responsibilities

• Gather and record statistical data relevant to measuring performance against agreed indicators and participate in review and evaluation activities.
• Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• Work within Wuchopperen's Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.
• Other duties as required, within your skills, experience and capacity.

For applicants to be successful in this role, they should demonstrate:

• Proven ability to plan, develop and deliver health promotion programs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander target groups, in the target areas through a demonstrated understanding of the health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

• Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

• Proven commitment to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to engage and encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to commit to healthy lifestyle change.

• Extensively developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders as well as effectively advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment, prioritise and meet deadlines, deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.

• Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen.

Qualifications and experience:

• Preferably the candidate will have at least two years of experience working in a Community Controlled Health Service, or Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, Community Care, or similar qualification.
• Preparedness to undertake further VET Training (i.e. Cert IV in Fitness).
• Demonstrated experience working in Healthy Lifestyle or similar Health or Community Engagement / development programs, is desirable.

Requirements:

• Hold a current Blue Card (for suitability to work with children and young people).
• Proof of qualifications is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
• Possess a current driver's licence.
• A commitment to adhere to Wuchopperen's policies and procedures.
