We value all differences, ensure equitable practices, and empower individuals to lead and learn inclusively in their everyday interactions. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging.

Our values and purpose define Epworth's approach and delivery. We pride ourselves on communicating and delivering them in a real and meaningful way. Every Patient Matters.

Job Description

In this permanent full-time role, based at Epworth Richmond, you will lead and role-model the delivery of emergency medicine services to over 30,000 presentations each year. You will be responsible for direct clinical services across thirty-one treatment spaces including two resuscitation bays and a fast-track cubicle area. Reporting to the Director of Medical Services and the Executive General Manager at Epworth Richmond, you will provide leadership, governance, and strategic vision to a strong and diverse team in the Emergency Department.

The role includes overseeing a headcount of 80+ emergency physicians, career medical officers and registrars and working alongside the Nurse Unit Manager and the Critical Care Services Manager to ensure a strong, collegiate team-based approach in the way the Department operates.

Emergency Medicine in Australia is evolving and adapting to the needs of the community in the post-COVID era; there is growing demand for private Emergency Medicine to optimise patient flow and resource management in order to deliver safe, high quality, evidence based clinical care to maximise our patients' health outcomes and experience. In a not-for-profit organisation, it is critical to ensure constant review of efficiency, costs, and team contributions, and to deliver a high quality, financially viable Emergency service which enhances Epworth's reputation as a centre of excellence.

In the context of continuous improvement, this maximum term role will contribute to any internal or external reviews being undertaken within the Emergency Department to ensure our service continues to deliver excellent patient care and provides a supportive and cohesive working environment.

You'll make an impact by:

  • Providing expert supervision, advice and mentoring to medical staff to support the delivery of safe, evidence-based care
  • Working collaboratively with nursing leadership to improve health outcomes and patient experience
  • Effectively communicating with inpatient services to ensure safe patient handover
  • Monitoring consumer service delivery, maintaining strong person-centred care
  • Maintaining strong budgetary oversight
  • Contributing to any review of emergency service provision and employment models
  • Undertaking relevant duties both within the ED and the hospital with representation on required committees

For you to be successful in this role…

You are an experienced FACEM who may be looking for an opportunity to lead a busy private inner-city ED. A natural communicator, you take a respectful consultative approach that promotes effective teamwork and patient safety. Passionate and committed to patient-centred care, you take a vested interest in the development of your team knowing the positive impact this will have.

You will have:

  • Current, unencumbered Specialist AHPRA registration
  • Fellowship with the Australian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM)
  • Significant experience in the provision of emergency medicine services – private sector experience advantageous
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of clinical governance and associated frameworks
  • Prior experience in a leadership role is highly regarded but not essential
  • Working rights to work in Australia

At Epworth, it's a community.

It's the sense of belonging and being part of an organisation and a team that works to make sure that every patient matters. In addition to this, you will have access to:

  • Epworth's enhanced Not for Profit status (and not available in the public sector) provides the opportunity for employees to salary package up to $15,900 pre-tax annually, leading to greater take home pay + $2400 meals and entertainment.
  • The largest educational scholarship program of its kind in Australia
  • Ability to purchase up to four additional weeks of leave
  • Reimbursement for relocation expenses if you are moving interstate or from regional areas in Victoria
  • Reduced cost of health services for you and your family at Epworth

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. This includes First Nations peoples, people with disability, mature-age and young job seekers, members of the LGBTIQA+ community, and individuals from all cultural backgrounds. We are committed to providing an equitable, inclusive, and barrier-free recruitment experience for everyone.

If you need support during the application process or would like to discuss reasonable adjustments, we encourage you to let us know what you need to participate fully and confidently. We understand that sharing your needs can feel daunting, so please know that any information you provide will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and respect.
