Position Information

Carlton South Public School is a diverse Sydney school of about 515 students, with 80% from language backgrounds other than English and 53 languages represented. The school focuses on evidence-based, data-driven teaching to deliver explicit, differentiated learning that ensures growth for every student. Student wellbeing is prioritised through the Promoting Positive Behaviour (PPB) program and the Learning Powers framework. Students also enjoy diverse extracurricular opportunities such as dance, band, choir, chess, drama, and PSSA sport. Parents and the P&C play an active role through collaboration, volunteering, and fundraising. Current priorities include strengthening data-driven practices and educational leadership with a focus on collaborative practices.

In 2026 we will see the establishment of our new Inclusive Learning Hub, consisting of two Autism (Au) classes and one Autism/Intellectual Disability (Au/IO) class. The Assistant Principal Special Education will establish the routines for the inclusive education classes, teach on of the three classes, lead and supervise the inclusive education class teaching and support staff, and will oversee all aspects of teaching and learning for the students in the three classes. The Assistant Principal Special Education will be a part of the school leadership team along with the Principal, Deputy Principal, Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction and four Assistant Principals.

Selection Criteria

In addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with autism and intellectual disabilities within a support unit.

Evidence of a highly organised and collaborative leaders, with a capacity to build and maintain positive, inclusive partnerships with students, families, staff, external agencies and the wider community.

Proven ability to lead and develop evidence based and evaluative practices to implement high quality differentiated curriculum, including the development of individualised learning programs that maximise student engagement, communication and learning.

Successful experience in building capacity of staff to facilitate whole school professional practices that improve learning and wellbeing outcomes of students with disabilities and/or other complex needs.

General Selection Criteria
  1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
  2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
  3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
  4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
  5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
  6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
