About the role
As the Data Governance Manager you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining data governance policies and standards. They will lead initiatives to improve data quality, manage data lifecycle processes, and ensure adherence to regulations such as APRA, ASIC, and GDPR where relevant. The role includes stakeholder engagement, risk management, and mentoring junior team members to support a data-driven culture across the organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and execute the organisation's data governance strategy: Design and maintain a comprehensive data governance framework aligned with business objectives and regulatory requirements, ensuring data assets are effectively managed and leveraged.
- Establish data standards, policies, and procedures: Create, document, and regularly update data management policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure consistent data definitions, usage, and quality throughout the organisation.
- Monitor compliance with data policies and regulatory requirements: Oversee ongoing compliance monitoring activities, including internal audits and regulatory reporting, to ensure all data practices meet APRA, ASIC, and other relevant financial services rules.
- Lead data quality improvement initiative: Identify data quality issues, coordinate root cause analysis, and implement corrective measures with stakeholders to enhance accuracy, completeness, and reliability of data.
- Collaborate with IT, security, and business units to ensure data integrity and security: Work closely with IT and Security teams to design data controls and access management protocols, safeguarding sensitive financial and member data against unauthorized use or breaches.
- Conduct data risk assessments and support audit activities: Assess data-related risks, develop risk mitigation plans, and provide expert input during internal and external audit processes focused on data governance and compliance.
- Promote awareness and understanding of data governance principles across staff: Deliver training sessions, workshops, and communications to foster a culture of accountability and good data stewardship at all organisational levels.
What we're looking for
- Strong familiarity with industry-specific regulatory frameworks such as APRA Prudential Standards, ASIC regulations, Privacy Act, and where applicable, GDPR and other international data privacy laws.
- Proven track record in designing, implementing, and maintaining data governance frameworks and policies that drive compliance and improve data quality and security.
- Hands-on experience with data governance tools, metadata management, data quality platforms, and business intelligence systems
- Demonstrated ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels, from senior executives to operational teams, fostering collaboration and promoting best practice data governance.
- Leadership experience managing small to medium-sized teams, including coaching, performance management, and professional development
- Strong analytical skills, with expertise in data risk assessment, data quality metrics, and regulatory audit preparation
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of translating complex data governance concepts into clear, actionable guidance for diverse audiences.
