About the Role
As a Criminal Lawyer, you will provide high-quality legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients charged with criminal offences. You'll work across a diverse range of matters in the Local and Supreme Courts, including pleas, hearings, trials and appeals.
You will be part of a dedicated team of criminal solicitors, client service officers, and administrative staff who share a commitment to justice, advocacy, and cultural respect. This role may involve travel to regional and remote communities for bush courts and outreach work.
What You'll Do
- Represent clients in the Local and Supreme Courts, including bail applications, committals, trials, and appeals
- Provide high-quality legal advice on complex criminal law issues
- Mentor and support junior lawyers and contribute to the professional growth of your team
- Participate in after-hours custody phone and duty lawyer services as required
- Contribute to law reform, policy development, and community legal education initiatives
- Uphold NAAJA's values of excellence, respect, accountability, courage and innovation in all aspects of your work
What You'll Bring
- Admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory
- Demonstrated understanding of the issues contributing to the disproportionate involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the criminal justice system
- Proven experience in criminal law advocacy, including trial and appellate work
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities
- High-level time management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
- Willingness to travel to remote communities across the Northern Territory
- Current driver's licence and ability to obtain a Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card)
