Senior Storage Infrastructure Specialist – 3-Month Contract

Location: ACT, Australia

Clearance: Must be able to obtain Baseline

A Federal Government Department is seeking a highly skilled Senior Storage Infrastructure Specialist for a three-month contract. Following recent infrastructure upgrades, the department requires a specialist to optimise their Dell PowerScale and Isilon environment to ensure maximum performance, scalability, and efficiency.

This crucial role supports the department's petabyte-scale storage platform, which underpins key Media & Entertainment workflows including high-speed media ingest, editing, archival, and retrieval.

What You'll Do:

  • Produce a detailed technical audit report outlining current storage architecture, operational health, risks, and strategic recommendations.
  • Develop clear architecture diagrams illustrating cluster configuration, storage tiering, and data services.
  • Create operational runbooks to guide storage administration, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance.
  • Deliver capacity and growth forecasts with actionable recommendations to ensure scalability and efficient storage utilisation.
  • Conduct knowledge transfer sessions with ICT staff to enable ongoing management and smooth operational continuity.

Technical Focus:

  • Review and optimise storage cluster configurations, including all-flash, archive, and legacy nodes.
  • Analyse and optimise PowerScale data services such as SmartPools, SnapshotIQ, SyncIQ, and tiering strategies.
  • Identify and resolve storage performance bottlenecks including metadata efficiency, I/O, and protocol throughput (SMB/NFS).
  • Recommend architectural improvements to elevate storage performance, utilisation, and reliability.
  • Produce comprehensive documentation of the storage environment for implementation and maintenance.

What We're Looking For:

  • Expert hands-on experience with Dell PowerScale and Isilon (OneFS 8.x/9.x).
  • Proven capability in designing, administering, and optimising enterprise-scale storage environments for high-performance workloads.
  • Deep understanding of scale-out NAS architecture, storage tiering, and data services.
  • Experience producing documentation for complex storage environments, including operational runbooks.
  • Strong communication skills to present technical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Scripting skills (Python/Bash) for automation and analysis are highly desirable.
