Job Details

The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) requires an experienced
Storage Infrastructure Specialist
to optimise and stabilise its recently upgraded
Dell PowerScale and Isilon storage environment
. This critical role supports the NFSA's petabyte-scale infrastructure, which underpins
media ingest, editing, archival, and retrieval workflows
across the organisation's digital preservation operations.

The specialist will conduct a comprehensive audit of the current storage landscape, produce technical documentation, and implement performance improvements to ensure
maximum efficiency, reliability, and scalability
of the storage ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct a full
    technical audit
    of the existing Dell PowerScale/Isilon environment, identifying risks, performance issues, and opportunities for optimisation.
  • Develop
    architecture diagrams
    and technical documentation capturing cluster configuration, data services, and operational health.
  • Produce
    operational runbooks
    to guide administration, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Provide
    capacity and growth forecasts
    with actionable recommendations for scalable storage utilisation.
  • Conduct
    knowledge transfer sessions
    with NFSA ICT staff to enable sustainable management and operational continuity.
  • Review and optimise
    SmartPools, SnapshotIQ, SyncIQ
    , and related data tiering and replication configurations.
  • Analyse and remediate
    I/O and throughput bottlenecks
    , ensuring stability and consistent performance across SMB and NFS protocols.
  • Develop clear recommendations for
    architecture and configuration improvements
    supporting long-term storage strategy.

Essential Criteria

  1. Dell PowerScale / Isilon Expertise (60%)
  2. Demonstrated experience designing, administering, and optimising enterprise-scale Dell PowerScale and Isilon environments supporting high-performance, large-scale workflows.
  3. Technical Documentation & Communication (20%)
  4. Strong ability to translate technical findings into actionable insights, produce clear documentation, and communicate effectively with technical and business stakeholders within structured change frameworks.
  5. Troubleshooting & System Stability (10%)
  6. Proven experience resolving complex issues across multi-protocol storage systems (SMB/NFS), ensuring uptime, data integrity, and sustained performance.
  7. Storage Security & Lifecycle Management (10%)
  8. Comprehensive understanding of storage security, replication, backup, and data protection frameworks, including hardening and access control best practices.

Desirable Criteria

  • Scripting and Automation
    – Proficiency with Python or Bash for automation, performance diagnostics, and data analysis.

Working Arrangements

  • Onsite, five (5) days per week
    at the NFSA Building, Acton (ACT).
  • Work to be performed
    within standard business hours (7am–7pm)
    , Monday to Friday.
  • The role is fully onsite for the duration of the three-month engagement.
