Position Statement

The purpose of this position is to provide high-quality, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive financial counselling and intake support to individuals engaging with the National Redress Scheme. The role is responsible for conducting client assessments, delivering practical financial guidance, and supporting clients to prepare for and manage the financial and emotional impacts of Redress outcomes. The position also contributes to the effective coordination of client waitlists, ensures accurate and timely documentation, and participates in continuous quality improvement to enhance service delivery within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Key Accountabilities and Deliverables

Intake and Assessment

  • Conduct initial client intakes and gather relevant personal, financial, and historical information in a trauma-informed and culturally responsive manner.
  • Assess eligibility for Redress Support Services and, where appropriate, assist clients to understand their options within the National Redress Scheme.
  • Record and maintain accurate case notes and client information in the client management system.

Financial Counselling and Redress Preparation

  • Provide information and practical support to help clients understand and manage financial matters related to Redress payments (e.g., budgeting, debts, Centrelink impacts, managing lump-sum payments).
  • Support clients to prepare financially and emotionally for potential Redress outcomes, including discussing safe planning, spending, and financial wellbeing.
  • Liaise with financial institutions, creditors, and relevant agencies to advocate for fair and informed financial decisions on behalf of clients.
  • Provide community education and resources on financial wellbeing and Redress-related financial issues as required.

Waitlist Management and Client Contact

  • Maintain regular contact with clients on the waitlist, providing updates on allocation timeframes, service processes, and available interim supports.
  • Monitor client wellbeing and financial vulnerability, flagging any changes in risk or urgency with the Team Leader for review or early allocation.

Application Progress and Client Updates

  • Liaise with counsellors, caseworkers, and administrative staff to gather accurate updates about clients' Redress application progress to relay onto clients where needed.
  • Support clients to understand updates and manage emotional or financial responses, using grounding and containment techniques.
  • Refer clients back to their allocated counsellor for ongoing therapeutic or casework support as appropriate.

Administration and Reporting

  • Maintain clear, accurate, and confidential client records, ensuring all documentation meets organisational and funding requirements.
  • Participate in supervision, reflective practice, and professional development to maintain high standards of trauma-informed financial counselling and intake work.
  • Contribute to service quality improvement, policy development, and procedural reviews related to intake, financial counselling, and waitlist management.
  • Adhere to RA-NT policies, professional codes of conduct, and confidentiality requirements in all client interactions.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in financial counselling, intake, assessment, or client support roles in trauma-informed or social service settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage sensitive, trauma-related, and financial conversations professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and inclusively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • High level of organisational skills and attention to detail in documentation and follow-up.
  • Qualification in Financial Counselling, Social Work, Counselling, Psychology, or Community Services.

Desirable

  • Membership or eligibility for membership with a recognised financial counselling body (e.g., Financial Counselling Australia).
  • Experience using client management systems (e.g., Penelope).
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and strengths-based practice approaches.
  • Understanding of the financial and emotional impacts of the National Redress Scheme on survivors of institutional child sexual abuse.

Requirements

  • A satisfactory Northern Territory working with children check.
  • A satisfactory national criminal history check.
  • Possession of a current NT Driver's License.
  • A commitment to our Safeguarding Children Practice and Behaviour Guidelines.
