About The Role
The Western Australia Nickel (WAN) Heritage Team is responsible for delivering dual goals for the company, delivering social value in line with our Reconciliation Action Plan and unlocking resource value in line with our Life of Asset Plans.

At BHP we believe Traditional Owners have intrinsic rights to the land on which we operate. The role of the Heritage Team is to ensure that the company delivers land access in line with the expectations of Traditional Owners and in line with our Charter Values.

The Specialist Cultural Heritage role is responsible for providing technical advice and guidance on cultural heritage-related matters at WAN. The role promotes protection of cultural heritage values in the first instance at WAN through the development of scopes of work for heritage assessments, compliance with our policies and procedures, engagement with Native Title Holders (NTHs) and Traditional Owners (TOs), providing technical advice and assessments, and conducting risk assessments. Additionally, the role ensures consistency in third-party received reporting and data by conducting technical reviews. The role involves supporting BHP to meet its current production targets, future growth objectives and Reconciliation Action Plan incentives by facilitating heritage surveys and cultural understanding activities in line with relevant heritage legislation and company commitments.

Key Responsibillties

  • Develop clear and fit-for-purpose scopes of work for cultural heritage assessments, salvage works, activity monitoring and other on-site heritage-related work.
  • Provide technical advice on cultural heritage matters, including site significance assessments, heritage constrained projects and survey outcomes.
  • Interpret archaeological and ethnographic reports to inform planning, approvals and land access decisions, assess risk and provide mitigation options.
  • Undertake desktop assessments to assess cultural heritage impacts and risks and provide due diligence advice to support project planning and approvals.
  • Assess land access and ground disturbance permits using the Global Land Use Permit (GLUP) system.
  • Support relationships with Prescribed Body Corporates (PBCs), NTHs, TOs, and other indigenous stakeholders.
  • Ensure reports and data are stored in line with the regional standard in the Cultural Heritage Information Management System (CHIMS).

About You

  • Strong applied knowledge of cultural heritage legislation and best practice heritage management.
  • Experience interpreting archaeological and ethnographic information to support land access and approvals.
  • Ability to deliver clear, well-reasoned advice to internal stakeholders and project teams.
  • Ability to develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders through the use of excellent communication skills.
  • Cultural awareness and positive experience working with Native Title Holders, Traditional Owners, Prescribed Body Corporates (PBCs) or other indigenous organisations.
  • Working knowledge of cultural heritage survey process, site recording methodologies, and Western Australia heritage legislation
  • Tertiary qualification in Cultural Heritage Management, Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • Practical experience in heritage advisory, regulatory compliance, or land use planning.
