- Contribute to the amazing grounds at Canberra Grammar School
- 40 hours a week, with a rostered day off once a month
About the Role
The Grounds Worker plays a vital role in supporting the presentation, maintenance, and safety of the Canberra Grammar School (CGS) campuses. This position is responsible for ensuring that all school grounds — including the Whole School Campus, the Northside Campus, and the CGS Rowing Centre — are consistently maintained to a high standard, providing a welcoming and safe environment for students, staff, families, and visitors.
The role involves a wide range of duties including landscaping, lawn and garden care, rubbish and waste management, outdoor repairs, and general upkeep of outdoor facilities. The Grounds Worker is also responsible for contributing to the physical security and regulatory compliance of the school grounds, ensuring all outdoor areas meet relevant health, safety, and environmental standards.
Working as part of the broader Facilities and Maintenance team, the Grounds Worker collaborates closely with other grounds staff, tradespeople, and operational staff to deliver high-quality, timely, and efficient grounds services across multiple sites. This role requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing maintenance needs.
By maintaining clean, functional, and aesthetically pleasing grounds, the Grounds Worker contributes directly to the overall educational experience and well-being of the CGS community.
About You
You are dedicated, passionate and possess the following:
- Strong knowledge of horticulture, landscaping, and turf management
- Proficient in planting, pruning, mowing, fertilising, pest/disease identification, and weed control
- Ability to operate and maintain gardening tools and machinery safely (e.g., ride-on mowers, blowers, trimmers, irrigation systems)
- Attention to detail with a commitment to maintaining immaculate grounds
- Time management and organisational skills to balance routine maintenance with seasonal tasks
- Physical stamina and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with facilities staff and support school events
- Problem-solving skills in diagnosing plant health issues and applying sustainable solutions
- Certificate II/III in Horticulture, Landscaping, or Parks and Gardens (or equivalent experience) or final year apprentice working towards the qualification
- Chemical Handling or Pest Management Accreditation (if you've done a ChemCert or similar)
- First Aid and WHS training (advantageous in a school environment)
- Driver's licence and experience with utility vehicles or trailers (if relevant)
- Excellent written English and effective interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to manage a team of people with diverse personalities
- Excellent technological literacy across a range of applications
- Physically fit and able to perform manual handling
- Working at heights qualifications.
All team members at CGS are required to have:
- Appropriate qualifications
- A valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People Card
- A current National Police Check; and
- Full working rights within Australia.
