About the role:

The Policy Officer, Nursing and Midwifery Workforce will support work relating to key issues affecting the nursing and midwifery professions within the health sector. The Policy Officer will support collaborative planning and implementation of workforce initiatives that build the capacity of the nursing, midwifery and broader health workforce to respond to systems-level challenges. This includes work that supports workforce promotion and attraction, entry to nursing and midwifery practice, as well as retention and ongoing professional development projects.

To be successful in this role, you will be a high performing team member with strong analytical, written, problem solving, project management and communication skills. You will also have experience in monitoring program budgets and analysing and presenting data. You will work closely with team members and other stakeholders to respond to a range of emerging issues and evolving priorities pertaining to nursing and midwifery workforce.

About you:

The Department of Health is seeking a skilled Policy Officer to support the development and implementation of health policies and initiatives. This role requires a highly organised, analytical professional who can manage projects, solve complex problems, and communicate effectively across a range of stakeholders.

The successful candidate will have experience in project management, including consulting with and influencing stakeholders, developing detailed project plans with clearly defined objectives, monitoring progress, managing risks, and ensuring outcomes are achieved. They will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, gathering and analysing relevant information, considering multiple perspectives, and proposing and implementing practical solutions while evaluating effectiveness and adjusting approaches as needed.

Excellent written communication is essential, including the preparation of briefs, reports, correspondence, and presentations in clear, concise, and professional language, tailored to the purpose and audience. The role also requires strong planning and organisational skills, including the ability to set priorities, allocate resources, establish systems and processes to track progress, and anticipate and address potential barriers to success.

  • A sound understanding of the Victorian health system, and knowledge of the department and its operating processes and information systems is essential.
