Head of Projects / Project Director – Major Mining Development

A well-capitalised and growth-focused Australian based mining company is seeking a highly experienced Head of Projects / Project Director to lead the development of a flagship mine site in Africa. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to oversee the full project lifecycle of a major mining operation—from final design through to construction and commissioning.

About the Role

As Head of Projects, you will be responsible for the safe and successful execution of a large-scale open-pit mining development. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, manage contractors, and ensure the project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest environmental and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of project development, including final engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Develop and manage detailed project budgets, schedules, and risk management plans.
  • Select and oversee EPCM contractors and key service providers.
  • Ensure alignment with corporate strategy, regulatory requirements, and operational objectives.
  • Coordinate closely with ESG, permitting, and operational readiness teams.
  • Provide regular reporting to executive leadership and the board.

Skills & Experience

  • 15+ years of experience in mining project development, with a proven record of delivering major capital projects.
  • Background in mining and complex processing infrastructure.
  • Experience managing projects in Africa and Australia or similarly challenging environments.
  • Degree in Engineering or related discipline; project management certifications (e.g., PMP) advantageous.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management capabilities.
