Senior UX Designer

Hello there My name is Matty Schreck, and I'm the Head of Design here at WiseTech Global.

Most of the Designers in my 40 strong Design team are deeply embedded within R&D teams as part of our industry-leading platform called CargoWise. I am now looking for a Senior UX Designer for the complex intersection between the Logistics domain and Accounting software.

This double complexity might sound intimidating, but we've got your back. The Design team has years of Logistics domain experience, and the Product Managers in this area are genuine subject matter experts. If you've worked on accounting products before, you'll hit the ground running, but we'll support your learning journey either way.

WiseTech Global is on a mission to change the world by creating breakthrough products that empower those who own, enable, and operate the world's supply chains. We're a global logistics software company with headquarters in Alexandria, Sydney. We've been listed on the ASX since 2016, and have over 4,000 employees world wide, with offices in 50 countries.

We are a team of 30 Product Designers in Sydney's Inner West (and a few more in Europe and the US) that looks after our flagship product CargoWise. The domain of global logistics is very broad and very deep, and CargoWise covers many, many aspects of it. We're shipping many hundreds of improvements to the product every year.

A specialized role: embedded Senior UX Designers for the Accounts Payable Automation Team

This role is part of Design's hub-and-spoke structure:

• The HUB is formed by the Design System team, and led by a Principal Designer who reports directly to me. We've built out a world-class Design System that greatly supports every Designer in my team.
• The SPOKES in this model are made up of Design Squads that are placed inside of product portfolios. Designers in these squads are embedded into business units for longer periods of time. These are usually Designers with a focus on UX and user research. Over time, they learn the subject matter of the business units from the subject matter experts they're working with.
• Hub and spokes work together to resolve difficult interaction problems. This is a win-win: embedded UX Designers have access to UI Designers, while the Design System team learns of real-world challenges their system needs to tackle.

Let me list a few more characteristics of the type of Senior UX Designer that we're looking for:

• You're able to tackle a vast spectrum of challenges of moderate to high complexity. We expect that you can carry a project through the entire double diamond of design thinking. You've built up a toolset of reliable methods and techniques to achieve the best outcomes for your projects.
• You can integrate yourself into existing workflows of your team. You happily educate your cross-functional peers on the value of modern Product Design, and gain their trust through great collaboration skills and the high quality of the work outcomes you provide. You need to be a Design pioneer who loves changing hearts and minds, always ready to explain your decision-making processes to others and keen to take your peers with you on the journey.
• You need to be able to pursue outcomes pragmatically, rather than sticking to processes too rigidly. You have to be able to make decisions even if there's a high level of uncertainty.
• You should be excited about projects with a high level of complexity that comes in part from the deep understanding of the subject matter domain. You will have to have tools and methods ready to tackle this complexity, and a natural drive to dig into the domains and embrace them in full. Your impact will grow as your domain knowledge deepens. Prior experience with accounting-related design projects would therefore be a big bonus

We're a tight team who lift each other up - so there's always help available when things get gnarly

This role is part of the Enterprise portfolio Design Squad that is led by a Lead Designer, with 3 other Designers working on adjacent projects. This squad has its own set of supportive rituals that are in addition to the larger Design team rituals for all Sydney-based Designers.

In Sydney, a week as a Designer usually starts with a Design Showcase session. Our various embedded Design Squads showcase particular projects or activities of interest in an effort to educate and help each other.

Later in the week, we have our Design Critique session. Designers offer the solutions they've been working on up for feedback from other Designers.

In between, our very helpful Design System team runs various activities that help embedded Designers with particularly challenging UI-based challenges.

With this combination of rituals on both the squad level and the entire Design team level, all Designers have access to multiple types of support on a regular basis, regardless of where they're embedded. This helps with projects, but also provides learning opportunities from others in the team.

Additionally, every Designer has a weekly 1:1 with their manager to get continuous constructive feedback, talk about the challenges they tackle, receive coaching, etc.

We round out our week with our Week-end Wind-Down, which is strictly social and has been known to include silly drawing games and quizzes like "Whose fridge is this anyway?".

Currently we meet, in person, every Tuesday at our Head Office in Alexandria, Sydney, allowing for stronger collaboration across our team. However, anybody is welcome to come to the office more often than that.
