Metro Mining Limited (ASX:MMI) is an Australian exploration and mining company based in Brisbane. Metro's flagship project, the Bauxite Hills Mine, located 95km north of Weipa is one of the largest independent projects within the internationally acclaimed Weipa Bauxite Region.
Metro Mining is currently seeking a strong Marine Operations Supervisor to join our Marine Management Team. The Marine Operations Supervisor is responsible for supporting the Marine Operations Superintendent to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Bauxite Hills Mine (BHM) marine supply chain.
Key Responsibilities
Scheduling & Planning
- Develop, check, and update daily and weekly barge schedules in line with production and shipping requirements.
- Review Ocean-Going Vessel (OGV) load plans and pre-arrival requirements.
- Integrate weather, tidal, and navigational constraints into operational schedules to support safe and efficient planning.
- Monitor tidal windows, drafts, and under-keel clearances to ensure safe passage of barges and vessels.
Coordination
- Allocate barges effectively across transhipment units, tugs, and shore teams.
- Liaise with loading facility teams to prioritise cargo readiness and avoid delays.
- Coordinate with tugs, and transhippers master's to support OGV arrivals, and departures.
- Work with HR/Crewing teams to monitor and adjust vessel crew rosters as required.
- Communicate schedules and changes promptly to marine crews, port authorities, and shore operations.
Port & Harbour Control Functions
- Manage port notifications, vessel arrival/departure requests, in line with port protocols.
- Maintain real-time oversight of vessel/barge positions and movements within port limits.
- Record and report incidents, delays, or navigational issues, escalating to management or harbour authorities as required.
- Ensure compliance with port regulations, environmental conditions, and reporting obligations.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Monitor barge turnaround times and cycle efficiency, adjusting plans as needed.
- Track and report on barge utilisation, delays, and performance against targets.
- Collect supply chain activity data, enter into systems, and conduct analysis to support operational decision-making.
Contractor & Compliance Management
- Supervise and manage contractor performance in relation to barge scheduling and planning tasks.
- Support the development of operating procedures and risk assessments, ensuring alignment with best marine practices and company safe operating procedures.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify operational bottlenecks and recommend improvements to optimise fleet and port efficiency.
- Perform other duties as directed by management to support overall marine and shore operations.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Proven experience in port operations, vessel traffic management, or marine logistics.
- Strong understanding of port, or barge and transhipment operations, including tug and pilotage coordination.
- Proficiency in scheduling/planning software and MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Excellent communication skills with ability to liaise effectively across marine crews, contractors, and port authorities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Knowledge of maritime safety regulations, environmental compliance, and risk management practices.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and adapt to dynamic schedules.
Desirable
- Tertiary qualification in Maritime Operations, Logistics, or related discipline.
- Previous experience in a Harbour Control, VTS (Vessel Traffic Service), or port/shore-based planning role.
- Familiarity with shipping documentation, port clearance processes, and reporting to regulatory bodies.
- Experience in contractor supervision and performance management.
