Your New Role

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Member Platforms Operations, the Observability Lead plays a key role within the Member Platforms team, ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of AustralianSuper's digital platforms and supporting technologies. The role involves proactive and reactive management of critical systems, including incident response, capacity planning, monitoring, automation, and operational excellence.

With a strong foundation in cloud-native technologies and modern infrastructure practices, the Observability Lead will identify and remediate system weaknesses, improve reliability through automation and observability, and collaborate with engineering and operations teams to ensure smooth transitions of services into production. This role is pivotal in supporting a 24/7 reliable digital experience for our members, underpinned by high service uptime and operational maturity.

  • Work with Member Platform teams and service providers to ensure systems have sufficient monitoring, logging and diagnostics capabilities to collect, process and report on real-time system performance data, including storing event information, providing alert notifications and analysing performance against core system metrics, SLOs and SLAs.
  • Ensure Member Platform teams and service providers integrate observability best practices into application code and deployment pipelines.
  • Ensure teams across Member Platforms utilise monitoring information to maintain system performance, including reacting to alerts to maintain operations and analysing long term trends to inform proactive improvements or operations activities.
  • Proactively identify and drive resolution of anomalies or performance degradation of key user journeys through alerting and telemetry data.
  • Lead in-depth analysis and correlation of data sources at an overall Member Platforms level to obtain real-time visibility into operational health, platform availability and capacity, security posture, cyber threats and security misconfigurations / other vulnerabilities.
  • Regularly review the utilisation of service capacity utilisation to avoid over/under-provisioning.
  • Centrally lead the design, provision, monitoring and maintenance of non-production and production environments for Member Platforms, with an aim of ultimately ensuring that environments are stable, reliable while also enabling an effective flow of work through the delivery lifecycle.
  • Drive the development and maintenance of observability tools (logs, metrics, traces) to ensure comprehensive visibility into all aspects of the Member Platforms landscape.

What You'll Need

  • Solid Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and / or operations management experience
  • Detailed knowledge of a broad range of IT systems and technologies, spanning Digital (web, mobile apps, databases), cloud, infrastructure, and applications
  • In-depth understanding and working knowledge of ITIL and other relevant ITSM frameworks
  • Experience delivering in DevOps/ DevSecOps environment, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and related processes
  • Experience working with monitoring and observability tools (Dynatrace, Google Analytics, Azure Application Insights or similar)
  • Experience in implementing and managing monitoring and observability frameworks and supporting tools
  • Experience in implementing and managing operational processes and controls
  • Regulated industry experience, ideally in financial services (Funds Management)
