The Role

As a Port Engineer at TasPorts, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the effective utilisation and management of infrastructure assets across Tasmania's ports. You'll provide technical leadership and advice, and engineering expertise to ensure the delivery of fit-for-purpose infrastructure while managing business risk through the implementation of appropriate standards. This role is central to the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations of port infrastructure, contributing to both internal and external capital and maintenance projects, and day to day operational activities.

Key Duties

Leadership and Management

  • Provide engineering and design advice across TasPorts divisions to support infrastructure planning and operations.
  • Contribute to major project teams addressing complex technical challenges.
  • Offer technical guidance during high-risk activities and post-incident recovery.
  • Support the execution of the Infrastructure Business Plan with strategic insights and recommendations.
  • Mentor and develop engineering capability within the team.
  • Manage external technical resources and engagements.
  • Engage effectively with stakeholders using strong communication and negotiation skills.

Port Engineering

  • Develop and implement strategies to optimise asset capacity and lifecycle.
  • Ensure engineering practices align with safety standards and industry best practice.
  • Maintain technical records, standards, and guidelines.
  • Provide specialist engineering services for maritime and landside infrastructure.
  • Conduct investigations and develop solutions for infrastructure challenges.
  • Assess infrastructure capacity for current and future operations.
  • Prepare and certify engineering designs and documentation.
  • Review project finalisation documents and support project closure activities.
  • Estimate costs for engineering works and contribute to budgeting processes.

What You Bring

  • Strong analytical, research, and planning skills with a creative approach to problem-solving.
  • High-level interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
  • Proven ability to write and present technical reports and formal correspondence.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent engineering studies.
  • Commercial acumen and sound judgement in decision-making.
  • Ability to identify, manage, and communicate risks in dynamic environments.
  • Stakeholder engagement expertise and a collaborative mindset.

What You Have

Essential

  • Tertiary qualification in structural or maritime engineering (or suitable alternative).
  • Current driver's licence.
  • Eligibility to acquire and hold a Maritime Identification Security Card (MSIC).

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualifications in Engineering, Management, or equivalent.
  • Accredited Building Practitioner Licence with capability to certify engineering designs.
