About the role

This role is responsible for the effective management of incidents, accidents, hazardous spillages, and any emergencies that impact traffic flow across Melbourne's freeways and arterial roads.

Given the critical nature of these transport links and the high volume of traffic, even minor incidents can result in significant disruptions. The role requires proactive engagement and coordination with both internal and external stakeholders to resolve incidents safely, and efficiently.

Key Selection Criteria

To be successful as an Incident Response Officer, you will need strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to interpret guidelines, resolve complex issues, and take decisive action. Where solutions are unclear, you will analyse available information, consult with others when required, and apply sound judgment to ensure effective decision-making.

Building and maintaining positive stakeholder relationships is key. You will respond promptly to client needs, provide clear updates on developments, and take ownership of resolving inquiries or issues. Strong interpersonal skills will enable you to understand stakeholder perspectives, tailor communication appropriately, and ensure service delivery meets expectations.

You will also demonstrate resilience and resourcefulness, adapting confidently to challenges and providing constructive feedback. By monitoring and mobilising resources effectively within guidelines, you'll help maintain service standards while managing demands. Your ability to communicate persuasively, using facts and evidence to support your position, will further strengthen outcomes in this role.

Position accountabilities

– Provide incident response services on freeways and arterial roads.

– Identify incidents which have the potential to cause serious traffic or safety issues.

– Provide regular status information to the Traffic Operations Centre during incidents.

– Represent Department of Transport and Planning as the Traffic Commander when hand over is required on site from other agencies.

– Arrange for the provision of appropriate resources to manage the incident.

– Liaise with other agencies and resources to optimise outcomes and minimise community impacts for incidents.

– Ensure that any follow up actions are completed.

– Participates in internal briefings.

– In line with Section 31A of the Public Administration Act 2004 (Vic) other duties may be assigned consistent with employment classification, skills, and capabilities.

Qualifications and experience

– Driving Licence (without any restriction which preclude the incumbent from performing the inherent requirements of the position and which cannot be reasonably accommodated by the Department) (mandatory)

– Level 2 First Aid certificate. (desirable).
