ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a critical role for the AFL industry and is responsible leading the development and delivery of strategies that promote First Nations engagement and inclusion within the AFL industry.

The AFL considers that identifying as an Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under s 28 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

This role reports to the General Manager, First Nations Engagement and Inclusion, and leads a team with a number of direct reports.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide high-level strategic direction, advocacy, and expert advice across AFL functions to embed and advance the First Nations Strategy and Inclusion priorities throughout the organisation.
  • Lead the reporting and monitoring of the various workstreams within the First Nations Strategy.
  • Partner with AFL Clubs to champion initiatives that address racism and strengthen cultural safety, fostering inclusive environments within the AFL industry.
  • Build and maintain strong, influential relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to drive the successful implementation of the AFL's First Nations Strategy and Inclusion initiatives, ensuring alignment with broader AFL priorities.
  • Provide strategic leadership and day to day management to the First Nations Engagement and Inclusion Team, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and driving impactful outcomes across the AFL.
  • Provide cultural leadership and strategic support to the AFL First Nations Network, fostering connection, collaboration and empowerment across the organisation.

Core Competencies:

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Exceptional ability to engage, influence and collaborate with a range of key stakeholders, internally and externally including corporate, not for profit and government sectors.
  • Understanding of First Nation communities: Deep understanding and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and issues, and demonstrated ability to engage with key Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and communities.
  • Program Development and Delivery: experience of developing, implementing and directing First Nations and Inclusion programs that effect change.
  • Getting stuff done: Ability to execute initiatives on time, within budget and to agreed KPIs.
  • Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communications skills, and a strong understanding of the role of communication in engaging people and communities.
  • Understanding of AFL and its role in the community: Experience in the AFL industry, at Club, community or state level, or a deep understanding and connection to football. Proven ability in developing and managing football or related social programs.
  • Be a change maker: Experience and ability to innovate, challenge convention and manage change.
