We are seeking an Automation Technician to join our Maintenance Group within the Customer Delivery Division.

  • Base Salary of up to $116,000 plus 12% Superannuation (Any offer made will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the successful candidate)

The Opportunity

As the Automation Technician you will primarily be responsible for the maintenance, repair and operational functions of Telemetry, PLC, SCADA, Instrumentation, and Industrial/Automation Communication networks within Hunter Water's area of interest. This role will be required to work with minimal supervision.

What you'll do:

  • Planned and corrective maintenance, condition assessment, fault finding/diagnosis and rectification of Automation equipment including (but not limited to):
  • Telemetry and Process Controllers
  • Programmable Logic Controller equipment and I/O
  • Radio Telemetry equipment
  • SCADA system
  • Instrumentation
  • Wide Area Network hardware
  • Industrial Communication networks
  • Electrical solid state (soft starter) and variable speed starters

  • PLC software development utilising various protocols and programming.

  • Additions and modifications to SCADA mimics and database properties.
  • Provide technical advice to Hunter Water clients and other electrical staff within the group especially involving telemetry and electronic operations.
  • Repair and maintenance of WAN hardware/Industrial Ethernet systems including data switches and routers in accordance with ICT guidelines.
  • Assist in the development of Picture Process mapped Work instructions.
  • Working knowledge of AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.
  • Mark-up of electrical drawings to reflect work as constructed.
  • Limited High voltage switching, isolation, and planning (predominately related to On-Call work, or to maintain competency).
  • Perform reasonable overtime from time to time as required such that other team members are not overburdened.
  • Working in confined spaces and/or heights is a requirement of this role.

What you'll need to be successful:

Essential Criteria:

  • Electrical Trade Qualifications with a current Qualified Supervisor Certificate for Electrical Work
  • Post trade qualifications in Automation, Instrumentation, or a similar related field.
  • Formal competency (i.e., formal vendor training) in PLC, SCADA, Telemetry, or Instrumentation systems
  • Class C Drivers Licence
  • Construction Induction card (White card)
  • A minimum of 4 years demonstrated experience in the Automation field.
  • Advanced skills in using PLC's and SCADA systems for fault finding.
  • Demonstrated advanced PLC experience using IEC compliant programming languages.
  • Demonstrated experience with large SCADA systems using geographically dispersed RTU's.
  • Demonstrated competencies in Instrumentation.
  • Experience with Industrial Ethernet systems
  • Experience with Digital Radio systems
  • Experience in Industrial maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair and installation including motor starters, industrial and process control.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MS Office suite
  • Working knowledge of AS3000 Wiring Rules
  • Able to interpret Engineering drawings, OEM manuals, and standards

Desirable Criteria:

  • Completed, or be in the process of completing, formal qualifications in a relevant field (i.e. Advanced Certificate, Advanced Diploma or Engineering Certificate)
  • Live within Hunter Water's area of operations
  • Experience with, and completion of high voltage training including HV Access Permit Receiver, HV Switching Officer and HV Planning Officer
  • Experience with Geo SCADA / Unity Pro / Control Expert software
  • Experience with SCADAPack E series / 575 / 474 telemetry
  • Experience in a supervisory and/or project management role
  • Experience working within the water industry/utility infrastructure
  • Familiarity of computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Knowledge of SQL and/or Microsoft VBA
  • Maintenance report writing skills.
