Senior Lead Scientist

The Senior Lead Scientist is responsible for overseeing and leading all scientific, technical, and quality aspects of the company's cement and related product technology portfolio. This role manages laboratory operations, ensures rigorous quality assurance and quality control systems, develops and tests new and existing products, and provides expert technical guidance to both internal and external stakeholders. The role plays a pivotal part in safeguarding product integrity, regulatory compliance, customer satisfaction, and driving innovation within the organization's cementitious materials offerings.
The role reports to the Managing Director of the business and provides tactical, project-oriented support to the Management Team, and focused on the execution of research, managing the Laboratory and Research teams and resources
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Management & Leadership
- Lead and manage daily laboratory operations, including scheduling, resource allocation, and supervision of laboratory technicians.
- Ensure that laboratory facilities, equipment, and testing methods comply with applicable standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO, EN, AS/NZS).
- Maintain laboratory accreditation where applicable (e.g., NATA, ISO
Quality Assurance & Control
- Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive QA/QC programs across the product lifecycle.
- Monitor production batches and incoming raw materials for compliance with product specifications.
- Conduct root cause analysis and corrective actions in case of quality deviations or customer complaints.
- Manage calibration, verification, and maintenance of testing equipment and instruments.
Product Development & Innovation
- Lead the development of new cement and concrete product formulations, admixtures, binders, and blended cement products.
- Continuously optimize existing formulations to improve product performance, cost-efficiency, and environmental footprint.
- Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies (e.g., alternative binders, SCMs, carbon capture materials) into product lines.
Technical Documentation & Reporting
- Author and maintain technical documentation including:
- Product recipes and formulations
- Product specifications and application guidelines
- Limitations of use documents
- Technical data sheets (TDS)
- Safety data sheets (SDS/MSDS)
- Test reports and certifications.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and databases.
Customer & Supplier Engagement
- Provide technical support and consultancy to customers, resolving technical inquiries and complaints.
- Work closely with Sales, Marketing, and Product Development personnel to ensure customer needs are met with scientifically validated solutions.
- Liaise with suppliers to evaluate and qualify new raw materials and additives.
Internal Collaboration & Training
- Advise executive leadership on emerging industry trends, technical risks, and product opportunities.
- Provide ongoing technical training and support to sales, customer service, production, and technical teams.
- Represent the company at industry forums, conferences, and standards committees as needed.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all products and laboratory practices comply with local and international standards, environmental regulations, and occupational health and safety requirements.
- Participate in environmental, sustainability, and compliance programs where applicable.
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- Graduate and Postgraduate qualifications (Masters or PhD) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
- PhD candidates nearing completion will be considered.
- Exceptional candidates with equivalent industry experience may also be considered.
Experience:
- Minimum 5-10 years of industry experience in cement, concrete, or building materials technology.
- Proven experience in laboratory management, product development, and quality assurance in cementitious or construction materials.
- Familiarity with key industry standards (ASTM C150, EN 197-1, AS 3972, ISO 9001, ISO
- Experience with admixture chemistry, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), durability testing, and mix design optimization highly regarded.
Technical Skills:
- Advanced understanding of cement chemistry, hydration mechanisms, pozzolanic reactions, and blended binder systems.
- Proficient with laboratory instrumentation such as:
- XRD (X-ray diffraction)
- SEM/EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy)
- TGA/DSC (Thermogravimetric Analysis)
- Compressive strength testers
- Rheometers
- Excellent technical writing and documentation skills.
