About the role of Family Support Worker
The focus of Transcend Australia's work is to strengthen protective factors that foster acceptance and inclusion for trans, gender diverse, and non-binary young people within their families. We work directly with parents and carers to build confidence and resilience, and to provide evidence-based information, education, and support activities.
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Family Support Worker will operate within the Family Services team and play a key role in implementing our Model of Care.
The successful applicant will deliver empathetic, non-clinical peer connection and navigation services to parents and carers through intake calls, online group sessions via telephone or video conference, and in-person activities at our Parkville location (on a Thursday or Friday).
The role also requires availability to work one evening per week to facilitate online or face-to-face group sessions.
All services are provided using a person-centred, strengths-based approach and may include peer connection, information sharing, empathic listening, education, referrals to other services, and opportunities for community connection.

The successful candidate will demonstrate fit across the following criteria:
- Lived experience of supporting a child and/or young adult family member who is trans, gender diverse or non-binary.
- Experience working with families, parents and/or carers to support trans, gender diverse and non-binary young people.
- Relevant qualification and demonstrated experience having undertaken a similar role working with families and supporting peer-based support activities.
- Background, ideally from the health or mental health sector, that demonstrates strong quality and risk management skills, and commitment to system implementation and reporting.
- Capacity and experience delivering group-based activities with families, including managing online group discussion activities and coordinating volunteer facilitators.
- Capacity to share own lived experience in a meaningful, appropriate and considered way.
- High level interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise effectively with a diverse range of people, families and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated awareness of the role of families in helping trans, gender diverse and non-binary children and young people live affirming and productive lives.

- Support group coordination including volunteer coordination and overseeing online network group activities.
