Media & Communications Officer

  • Initial contract until May 2026 with a possible extension
  • Attractive hourly pay rate of $65/hr + super
  • Working 7hr per day / 35 per week
  • Based at the stunning Royal Botanic Garden (Onsite + 1-2 days WFH negotiable)

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

We're looking for a Communications Officer to work in a media team for a government department. Working closely with the content and marketing teams, you will develop stories and PR moments to positively engage audiences with the science, horticulture, education, and tourism initiatives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Develop and deliver media and communications campaigns across science, horticulture, and education themes.
  • Build and maintain strong media relationships to drive positive coverage.
  • Translate technical or scientific information into accessible, engaging stories for diverse audiences.
  • Coordinate communications and PR initiatives to promote events, research, and community engagement.
  • Provide advice on communication strategies and manage issues in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
  • Support the wider Marketing and Engagement team on key initiatives and campaigns.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience in media relations and issues management and/or experience in developing and commissioning engaging stories and multimedia content for traditional media or digital channels.
  • Proven ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging stories for media and digital platforms.
  • Strong writing, editing, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Current Australian Driver's Licence (travel required across Sydney, Mount Annan, and Mount Tomah).
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-volume environment and meet tight deadlines.
