WISE Employment is looking for a Mental Health Occupational Therapist Graduate for our new graduate role in North Melbourne .

In this 12-month role, you will help transform the lives of Australians living with mental health conditions through employment, using innovative, evidence-based, world-leading programs.

You will work with three main groups:

  • people living with a mental health condition
  • their support workers, carers and families, and
    employers

WISE IDEA stands for:

WISE IDEA develops and adapts a range of evidence-based interventions and best practice supports to assist participants to build key skills for work, support workers and significant others to provide effective support and employers to provide accessible workplaces.

These supports are then translated for and replicated in external markets. WISE IDEA has a particular focus on social and cognitive functioning skills development.

WISE IDEA also evaluates all interventions and supports developed and publishes the outcome of the research to continue building the evidence base.

We advocate to all levels of government, health and employment sectors, business and industry peaks, and philanthropy to break down the barrier between health and employment and influence policy and practice in both areas .

We are a dynamic, innovative multi-disciplinary team including staff with expertise in mental health and employment with varied professional backgrounds.

The role will involve...

  • Being trained to co-deliver the evidence based interventions/best practice support
  • Participating in feasibility/testing of ideas, interventions
  • Being a member of project teams to pilot, evaluate and document the intervention/best practice support within different service settings (group and individual)
  • Co-delivery of the intervention/best practice support within different service settings
  • Development of an understanding of 'train the coach' methodology to build capability of staff in different service settings
  • Under the supervision of WISE IDEA Mental Health and Employment Specialist-OTs, sourcing/adapting/developing vocational, cognitive and communications skills material to be used within programs
  • Promote the work of WISE IDEA in network meetings, conference presentations and other venues
  • Completing Occupational Therapy and other standardised assessments and reports as required by the evidence based intervention/best practice support (supervised, supported and co-signed by the WISE IDEA Mental Health Occupational Therapists)
    Under the supervision of WISE IDEA Mental Health Occupational Therapists, liaising/collaborating with other services, both internal WISE teams and external partner organisations

About you...

(Essential Criteria)

  • You have a Formal Qualification (at Masters level)
  • An approved degree from a recognised School of Occupational Therapy and eligibility for membership to the Occupational Therapy Association, or will graduate within 6 months
  • Current registration as an Occupational Therapist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA), or will be eligible within 6 months
  • Commitment to participation and documentation of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) that is aligned with Australian Occupational Therapy Competency Standards and individual learning goals.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional supervision to be provided by the WISE IDEA Senior Occupational Therapist/WISE IDEA Mental Health Occupational Therapist
  • Experience and demonstrated skills working with people with a mental health condition commensurate with graduate level
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and build trusting relationships with people affected by mental health conditions, and ability to deal sensitively with distress and unpredictable behaviour commensurate with graduate level
  • Recognition of the importance of employment in the recovery of people with mental illness
  • Commitment to assisting people with a mental health condition build skills and achieve their goals
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent IT literacy, planning, coordination and time management
  • Ability to contribute in an environment of innovation with an element of trial and error.
  • Ability to provide a recent National Police Check, Working with Children check and Disability Workers Exclusion Scheme clearance.
    Current Victorian drivers license

(Desirable Criteria)

  • Understanding of the mental health, disability employment and NDIS frameworks and associated complexities commensurate with graduate level
  • Knowledge of other Commonwealth, State and local government programs and initiatives including other mental health programs as well as networks in community based support commensurate with graduate level
  • Level 2 First Aid and OH&S Training
    Group facilitation experience commensurate with graduate level
